can't play SF DV AVI's in media player 9

I've had this problem since I started working with DV avi's a few years ago and I'm sick of it. All of my friends who have Vegas can export to AVI's and then play them in Windows Media PLayer. When I try to it says the media player has encountered an error. I'm pretty sure I have the DV codec on my computer.

I haven't always had Vegas. Originally I had premiere with a Pinnacle Systems DV500 and none of those AVI's would ever play on my media player. Interestingly my AVI's play fine on other machines and perfectly in Vegas. I have had this problem both in XP and ME on my machine. Any ideas on a fix?

did you download and install media player 9? also try using quicktime to play your video's. Also, get the latest directx.

Also, download GSpot from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

This is a nice little app that knows about (virtually) all the many audio and video codecs that are used in .AVI files. It can determine which codecs are required to play a particular .AVI and can identify whether they are present and correctly set up on a particular PC.

It may well be able to determine where the problem lies on this PC (probably a codec missing, I'd guess).

1st go here for info on wmplayer itself (see the FAQ): http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/

As suggested, updating both winxp & media player might help - might also want to install the winmedia 9 sdk stuff if you have room, as this will install some files I think are useful. Make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date.

Gspot as suggested is cool, but won't do much to cure anything... Assuming everything else with your system is cool, wmplayer 9 in XP should play your DV files, expanding them to proper size of 720 x 480 (no difference on display from non-DV 720 x 480 avi files). What can cause glitches is if there is an incompatible or broken DV codec set as the default within windows itself - the SOFO codec is only available in VV4 etc... Windows default codec, for all it's bad press, will work to play DV files as noted.

If you've got another codec interfering (or think you might), you can hunt down the codec files (gspot in codec info section or analogX dxman can help) -> then rename or move these files. You can use dxman to unregister the codec, & you can also sometimes disable codecs using the control panel -> sounds and audio devices -> hardware -> video codecs -> properties.

Other things that may cause problems playing DV files in wmplayer: Incorrect settings within wmplayer itself. It needs the slider for digital video size set to large in tools -> options -> performance -> advanced... You may need to make sure the box for Use video mixing renderer is "Not" checked. You may have to enable/disable other options. Under view -> video size, might want to have the first line checked, but not the 2nd.

If you want to try another player, might try the one here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
