Tons of information on this. Search for "VOB." Here are two links:

Vegas doesn't directly support the importing of VOB files, and there have been mixed results when doing so. Since a VOB file is basically a mpeg file in a wrappe rsometimes Vegas will allow you to import it, but that is not always the case. Also if you do finally get the video you will most likely not get audio since it will be ac3 audio which Vegas doesn't support as well, at least the importing of it.

So it seems if I want to import a audio or video bit from a commercial DVD( ex: Jaws) I may be better off with a third party software? Or are there easier workarounds? What would you do?

Thanks again

I'm doing it at the moment for quite legal reasons.
What you're trying to achieve is firstly illegal and even without having to deal with CSS not exactly a simple task. Even when you get it to work the results may not be stellar although useable.

You will have to use 3rd party stuff for sure, the video can be handled by rename the VOB file to mpg, usually this works OK but the audio is where things can get messy. It'll almost certainly be ac3 in which case you need to demux and then convert to .wav using something like BeSweet.

Best place to checkout is VCDHelp.com or Doom9

Thanks for the tip. Please note I have no intention of doing this for illegal reasons. I can't rename the files. I can't even copy or move files from the DVD rom drive.

Thanks

I recently ran into this "problem", what I did was simply copy the VOB to my HD, rename the VOB to mpg, and it was immediately useable on the timeline, apparently the VOB is that similar to mpeg.

If the DVD has CSS protection, which most commercial DVDs do then you can't place the VOB file on the timeline eventhough it is on your hard drive.
