Can't seem to find the proper render...

christopher523 wrote on 6/14/2009, 1:30 PM
I film with Kodak Zi6 HD 720p 30fps (29.97fps), I am editing with Sony Vegas MS 9.0b (Build 92) Platinum Edition. First of all when I import the videos they don't have sound as .MOV files and the .MP4 files are only sound. I'd like to fix that and also when I go to render there is no .H264 or .MPEG4 1280 x 720 ?????? Am I missing something? I thought all new editors had .H264 codecs????? Isn't this the wave of the present???? Please help. Also, get a upload error on YouTube and Facebook tells me that I have a waiting time of 21 hours and 26 minutes but never does anything. I also have no VST or Sony plug-ins... ?????
Thanks....

Your comment doesn't make much sense. Do you get audio inside the editor, yes or no? Is the camera recording in MOV or in MP4? Anyways, I can test it for you, just upload somewhere on a server a 2 MB file directly out of the camera (NOT youtube, because these sites re-encode, you need to upload the actual file somewhere where I can download it as-is).

So far as I can tell, (Sorry not the best at this) it captures in .h264 (.MOV) files, 16:9 ratio. Now as far as the , it brings along a 'dead' audio track and when I convert the file in the ArcSoft software that came with the camera to .Mpeg4 I only get an audio file which I just attach to the audio file. I'm not sure where I can upload it too... I did succesfully upload it to MySpace... not sure if that is good or not, as an .wmv11 file.

1) Did you try merely renaming the original file to .mp4 rather than converting it with third party software? It's worth a try.

2) Can you open the original file in Quicktime? If so, use it to give all the file properties and post them here. Alternatively, you can use the freeware MediaInfo to get the necessary information.

I am not trying to covert it with a third party software, I'm editing it, and no it does not open in quicktime

..."and when I convert the file in the ArcSoft software that came with the camera to .Mpeg4 I only get an audio file"...

Your words, not mine.

Once again,

1) Have you tried renaming the file to .mp4 rather than converting to .mp4 with third party software; and,

2) Will you provide some specifics about the files??

With some basic information, someone may be able to help. Without that, it is anybody's guess. Good Luck!

OK, sorry about that. When I try to rename the original video file it becomes a .mp4.MOV file, do you mean save as? And in which software? Sony Vegas doesn't see my camcorder, so I kinda have to go through the third party software. The only reason I am converting it is that Sony Vegas is not seeing the Audio that goes with the original .MOV video file. So, in order to have audio I need to convert it and paste them together in SV. On the downside, it becomes a quicktime .MPEG-4 file. Which is not h.264 or anything close to a compression I want or need, just an audio file. Now as far as more specifics on the original file: .MOV, 720p, 30fps, 16:9, and the audio file that I attatch to it is .MPEG-4. Beyond that i don't know.... Can I send you the original and rendered files and maybe you can see what I'm doing wrong? I don't know. Maybe it's my browser too. I am going to try to do this on my home PC where I can actually use another browser to connect to the internet. If I need to provide more specifics about the files please tell me what to provide... I think It's kinda obvious I don't know what I'm doing, so please be kind :) I know there's a solution to my problem out there, I just have to find it!
Thanks

OKAY, starting to figure things out A BIT! lol, anyway, I am trying to costomize my rendering in "Sony AVC" I noticed in replay after rendering it was very broken up. Here are my settings and I think I've got the kbps set wrong. What should it be and how do the other parameters look?
video rendering quality: Best
Audio: 128 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, Stereo, AAC.
Video: 512 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 1280x720
Video format: AVC
Custom frame size: 1280x720
Profile: Main
Entropy Coding: CAVLC
Frame rate: 29.9700(NTSC)
Field order: None(progressive)
Pixel aspect ratio: 1.000
Bit rate (bps): 512,000
file format: MP4 .mp4
So, if I need to change the bps, which I think I do, I might have a great MP4 renderer here. Thanks...

Sorry you didn't understand.

To rename a file extension, you don't use any kind of software. You just rename it:
1) Right-click on the file icon.
2) Change the extension by dragging your cursor over .mov, hitting Backspace, and typing in .mp4
3) Then hit Enter

Might or might not work in Vegas, depending on what's inside the wrapper (see below).

An MP4 or MOV file uses Codecs, which stands for Compressor-DeCompressor. There is an Audio and a Video codec used for each file. An MP4 or MOV file could use any of many audio and video codecs. To find this information, since you said that Quicktime does not open the files, you may download and install a free utility called MediaInfo.

Once you have done so, you may right-click on the MP4 or MOV file icon, click on MediaInfo, and it will give you lists of all of the information in the original file, including the video and audio codecs used. Then you may post that information here.

Again, having this information will assist others in leading you to a solution for your problem. Saying that a file is a MOV or MP4 is like handing someone a wrapped package and asking them to know what is without letting them unwrapping it.

If your original MOV file from your camera uses AVC video and AC-3 audio, renaming the file extension to .mp4 as suggested above "may" allow you to open and edit the file in Vegas with both video and audio intact on the timeline.

However, the video preview in Vegas may be choppy because of the high compression used in AVC encoding, so you may want to render to another format first to make editing go smoother. Others can help you with this. Hope this helps.

OKAY! DUH! Huge epiphany! Thank-you so much! you have been a wonderful help. And for anyone following this strand, if you're using a Kodak Zi6 you need to rename the files as .mp4 and also for the best render, go to "Sony AVC" then "Custom" and set these parameters:
Project Tab:
Video Rendering Quality: Best

Video Tab:
Format: AVC
Frame Size: Custom
Width: 1280 Height: 720
"Uncheck" Allow source to adjust frame size
Profile: Main
Entropy Encoding: CABAC
"Uncheck" Allow source to adjust frame rate
Field Order: None (Progressive)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0000
Bitrate (bps): I recommend anywhere from 4,000,000 to 6,000,000 for Vimeo. Only go below for longer videos.

Audio Tab:
Format: AVC
Sample Rate: 48,000 Hz
Bit Rate: 128,000

System Tab:
Format: MP4

In the template tab at the top, Type a name you want to save it as then click the floppy disk, Your template is now saved for future use.
