Can't use external monitor with firewire and jvc dh30000u deck

I am trying to view external monitor in vegas 5 via my firewire ports (which are working). I am piping the firewire from my computer through my jvc DH30000U deck as a pass through, and then SVHS from the deck to the external monitor or tv. The monitor sees the deck but does not see the connection to the computer via firewire. My firewire card is OHCI compliant and in working order (I have tested it with other devices and checked in device manager). In the preferences tab in Vegas I have selected OHCi compliant and ntsc dv. under the details box in preferences it does read Device Unavailable. I am told that it may have something to do with vegas looking for an a/v subunit whereas the deck is a vtr subunit (essentially a mismatch), but I do not have enough technical expertise to determine if that is right or how to fix it. So HELP.

Thanks

Just a guess here but is it possible that the JVC DH30000U does not have pass-through (i.e., DV to NTSC conversion)? I only ask because the specifications given for the JVC HM-DH40000, which is apparently the current model, seem to indicate that it may not.

From the HM-DH40000 Specs:

>>>MPEG-2 Codec for Digital Recording. The built-in Standard Definition MPEG-2 encoder/decoder or CODEC function enables D-VHS digital recording from NTSC analog sources, as well as DV MPEG-2 conversion recording from a connected MiniDV video camera. Also, when dubbing from an external analog video source such as a camcorder or VCR, JVC's Frame Synchronizer/TBC eliminates jitter from the input signal to produce high quality dubs that can actually appear to surpass the quality of the original.

DV and MPEG Input. Copy free digital to digital dubbing. Easy with direct digital connection of standard definition 480i, converting DV to MPEG-2 and receiving Transport Stream HD MPEG-2 from camcorders or PCs via the IEEE 1394 i.Link connection.>>>

JL, you may be right, but I still would like to know if there are work arounds (hopefully reasonably priced ones) that will allow me to not have to buy the advc300 from canopus.

You have to set the internal setup to 480I only before you can see anything out of the rear jacks. Check Cineform.com to see the details.

JJK, do you mean set the internal setup in vegas, or the HD30000U deck to 480i only.

No, in the D-VHS JVC deck menu options. And I believe when you do this it disables the firewire connection so you might just have to get the 300 like I did. By the way the 300 works very well. When I have the deck set to 480I none of my High Def. stuff works. So I just leave mine in the default setting and view the High Def on the monitor or the TV.
The Vegas external thru the ADVC 300 is Digital only and the JVC D-VHS deck is High Def only through the firewire, I think. You notice how positve I am? I don't use the High Def very much because I am waiting for the other manufacturers to introduce their High Def Cameras.

In reality I am only using my external monitor to check for color accuracy, so if I can use my deck as a pass through to accomplish this that is fine by me, high def or not.
