Can Vegas do text / video viewporting?

Sorry that I'm not using the correct terminology. Total newbie here.

So, I'm considering purchasing Vegas 5. I'd like to know if it is easy to do the following:

Take a video, and some text with a nice background. The text would be rendered in a very "heavy" font like Arial Black or something - it would be very large and would pan (or "marquee") across the screen over the background and the existing video would be seen "through" the text. I.e. the text outlines would be the clipping regions for the video.

Thanks for any help.

This is text masking, and yes, Vegas does a great job of it.
Two tracks.
Text on top track
Video on bottom track.
Parent top track to bottom track.
Compositing mode on top track to Mask.
Done.

Fabulous!

On a side note, I'm interested into getting into video production (music videos) purely as a hobby and after reading up on all of the competing products, I'm thinking of going with Vegas. It certainly seems to be the "Mac" of the video editing world <smile>.

And I mean that in a good way.

Absolutely and unlike a Mac for what you're wanting to do you only need Vegas, have you worked out you can record and mix an unlimited number of audio tracks as well as Video in this thing. Onviously you'll need some hardware along with that but Vegas is pretty agnostic about that as well.

Add to that, since you're intending to music vids (or even if not really) Vegas has no rivals on the audio side. Vegas was born as a MTR (Multi Track Recorder).

Well...I wouldn't go that far. Vegas has Nuendo, Sonar, ProTools, and Audition as rivals. While overall Vegas is the best of the bunch for just audio, IMO, ProTools is certainly no slouch.
You know I love Vegas and what I can do with it, but I also try to be a little objective.

I certainly agree Spot but since this is the Video forum and a video question, I was talking NLE terms here... gag, did I say that?

Yes, I'd love to toss Sonar but if and until... Vegas adds MIDI functionality, it can't compete in the strictly DAW realm, then again we're talking NLE here I thought (darn I said it again).
