cannot burn CD

JOHN_D wrote on 10/2/2006, 10:42 AM
Hi everyone, I 'm new here but excited. I have movie studio 6 and have installed update 6b. I spent several hours putting together a project expecting to make a movie and put it on DVD only to find out I cannot do that with my version.(It would have been nice to know I could not do that before purchasing, but I guess that is my fault) So anyways, I tried to just put it on a CD but the program tells me to put in a CD which I have tried 3 different CD-R's. The program see's my CD/DVD burner. I have tried the solution's in the troubleshooting area to no avail. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Also If I purchase the Platinum upgrade will that be all I need to be able to use the full version? Thank you in advance.

Just to be clear - you are talking about DVD architect studio 3 yes?

The usual flow is to put your video together, then click Make Movie and then select burn it to DVD.
This will render your video in Vegas Movie Studio and then send it over to your other program -DVD Architect Studio which should receive the file after it boots up. From there you set up your DVD menu - if you have any and then click make DVD.

I hope I am not insulting you if I ask - are you sure you are putting your blank DVD disk into a DVD burner. I only ask because I have a CD burner as well on my computer which cannot burn dvd's.

Do you have the latest drivers for your computer?

you really shouldnt have to upgrade to burn a dvd.

The platinum version (which is very good) adds key framing, a number of special effects, additional codec support - I can't remember all of them but you can find out at the Sony web site.

The "full" version of Vegas is not to be confused with Vegas Movie Studio. The interface is similar, but Vegas (no movie studio in the name) is much more sophisticated and costs a substantial amount more.

Good luck with it.

You can do a project in movie studio then render it to DVD architect and burn it on a DVD. But you have to have the platinum edition to do this come to find out. Movie studio has better transitions and is esier to work with for me. After failing to render and burn I tried to just put the Movie studio project on a CD but it does not see the disk but it see's my burner. My burner is all in one so you cannot make any mistake. As for full version I ment, able to use all of the movie studio and DVD architect features. It would be so much better if they just priced the stupid thing for full version so people do not expect more than what they get. I guess my CD/DVD burner is not compatible.

Hmmm. You don't need Platinum to burn DVDs. The non-platinum version also includes Vegas Studio and DVD Architect Studio so it will let you edit video and burn DVDs.

Vegas Movie Studio cannot burn DVDs. That's what DVDAS is for. Vegas can, however, burn Video CDs. Is that what you're trying to do? You keep mentioning blank "CD"s so i'm not sure which type of disc you're trying to create.

I was trying to burn DVD from Movie studio. If you choose "Make movie" in movie studio it gives you the choice to burn to DVD. It then renders the project and ask's if you want to send it to DVD architect. When I do that it says you must have the Platinum edition to burn DVD from movie studio. So then I tried to burn a "CD" in movie studio and it does not see the CD. So I cannot do anything with this project.

John, you don't need Platinum to burn DVDs. I have the standard VMS 6.0 which came with DVD Architect Studio 3.0. But Architect Studio is installed as a seperate application. Where did you buy Movie Studio? Did it come with Architect Studio?

Yeah, John, Don't be discouraged. If you have the regular Vegas Movie Studio package you have everything you need to make DVD's -- you don't need Platinum unless you are editing HDV high definition video. Regardless, though, the DVD capabilities are the same in both Regular and Platinum.

As the others have mentioned, Movie Studio is used for editing, and you can create MPEG2 files for DVD's with it. But you must use the DVD Architect Studio program -- which comes with Vegas Movie Studio -- to convert the files to DVD format and burn them to DVD. (The MPEG2 video and WAV audio files created by VMS must be recombined and reformatted into .VOB files for the DVD.)

Keep digging, or ask more questions here, but rest assured you should have everything you need to make DVD's.

Tim thanks for your response. I finally had to step away for a couple days. I thought I was pretty capable having a technical background and all but I'm having trouble grasping the instructions. They do not make much sense to me. I rendered to mpg2 but was not able to figure out how to save as mpg2 and open in architect. I was able to whip out the project in Movie studio but unable to burn to DVD. Is there any instructions step by step that I have overlooked?

This is what I get when I go to "burning DVD" in help file in movie studio.

Burning a DVD
File Menu
"When you use the Burn it to DVD option on the Make Movie Wizard,
Vegas Movie Studio software will convert your project to a format that you can write to a DVD and start DVD Architect Studio software.

This feature is available only in Vegas Movie Studio and Vegas Movie Studio Platinum."

I have just completed my first project, went through the Movie Maker Wizard which 'sent' the file to DVD Architect and I was able to burn a DVD.
Reading your earlier posts you only mention that you have Movie Studio - Mine is Movie Studio+DVD (Platinum Edition). I think that the '+DVD' might have some significance here.
JOHN_D wrote on 10/5/2006, 12:03 PM
I have Movie Studio+DVD/DVD Architect Studio standard. Not the platinum edition. I had asked earlier if I need the platinum edition to burn DVD and was told no. Strangeman did the platinum edition do everything for you step by step? I do not understand why it seems to be so complicated. Did you have to recompress anything to Burn a DVD with the platinum edition? thanks for your response
Strangeman wrote on 10/5/2006, 1:27 PM
It was all step by step stuff. I have noticed that VMS 6 seems to be have DVD Studio version 3, and VMS Platinum seems to have DVD version 4, but I don't know whether that makes a difference.
Strangeman wrote on 10/5/2006, 2:12 PM
Had a slight twinge of conscience because I had been using VMS 7 so I've gone back and checked the procedure in VMS 6 (still platinum, mind you).

In project, selected 'Make Movie'
told it I wanted to Burn DVD

It comes back with render settings
I changed paths to my Temp partition (don't use c:for my own files if I can avoid it)

Rendering took place

then prompted to send to DVD Architect Studio 3

Clicked on 'Make DVD'

Clicked on Burn

again changed to folder setting away from c:

added a volume name in next window

chose 'burn' (after having inserted blank DVD in DVD re-writer)

DVD produced

I presume you are not running a demo version (I seem to remember DVD burning was severely disabled in the demo version)

PS ... Having just re-read one of your earlier posts, I notice the implication that the direct link between VMS and DVD Architect might be one of the additional Platinum features, so it might be a little more complicated without that feature although not impossible.
Some of the additional NewBlue Transitions in the Platinum version are quite nice ...
MSmart wrote on 10/5/2006, 3:55 PM
John, I think I'm following you now. Since you don't have Platinum, you can't use the Send to Architet feature.

Use Movie Studio to render (Make Movie) a file on your hard drive. That file can either be AVI or MPEG. Once the Make Movie process has finished. Close Movie Studio. Launch DVD Architect. Find the file you created and drag it into DVD Achitect to burn.

DVD Architect can be a little consufing at first if your trying to make a menu at the beginning of the video. But if not, then once you've dragged the file into DVD Architect, choose Burn.

The key thing for you is that you MUST launch DVD Architect manually to burn your disc.

Let me know if that points you in the right direction.

Thanks for the effort and response Strangeman. I purchased the full version but i'm beggining to wonder if something is wrong. I have no problem up till the point of choosing to burn in DVD architect. Also aftre rendering and putting in the audio I preview and it does not look the same as origional before rendering. When I choose the make DVD architect locks up and I have to end program. Thanks for the replies.
MSmart wrote on 10/5/2006, 4:05 PM
John, even if you purchased the full version, you will still need to runder your video in Vegas (or Movie Studio) to a file on the hard drive. Then launch DVD Architect Studio.

Here's an idea, have you tried the "Show Me How" feature in Help? A few times when I was stumped, Show Me How stepped me through the process. It's a great feature that *really works*, I recommend you try it.
JOHN_D wrote on 10/5/2006, 5:01 PM
I have rendered in many formats. When I choose show me it tells me in movie studio I need to have platinum to "make movie". When I try to just open Architect and try to burn it locks up. when I go to save in Movie studio it only gives me the choice to save as .vf. I have tried Show me several times but the directions seem incomplete to me. I have several files rendered to my hard drive. They just do not show up when i try to open straight from architect. I have rendered just about every format.
MSmart wrote on 10/5/2006, 5:20 PM
OK, When I get to my editing computer later tonight, I'll document the steps I use, which will be different than Strangeman's as I don't have Platinum (yet - just ordered the upgrade).

The learning curve is fairly high with Movie Studio and DVD Architect, so I feel for you.
JOHN_D wrote on 10/5/2006, 6:11 PM
Thanks, I just uninstalled DVD architect and reinstalled. Rendering next.
MSmart wrote on 10/5/2006, 9:36 PM
Here's how I do it:

Movie Studio
1) Make Movie
2) Save it to your hard drive
3) Filname: XYZ.AVI, Format: Video for Windows (.avi), NTSC DV (Widescreen actually), Save project markers in media file checked
4) Render till done. (Turn on fan or otherwise make sure computer stays cool)
I use SpeedFan to adjust fan speeds based on heat generated by CPU.

DVD Architect Studio
1) Use Explorer tab to file AVI file
2) Drag file to Untitled disc (above Menu 1) (if no menu for disc)
3) Delete Menu 1 (if no menu for disc - menus are a whole other topic)
4) Make DVD > Prepare
5) Browse to folder where you want disc contents created (make new if necessary)
6) Click Next through information messages
7) Click Finish if no errors
8 ) DVD contents render (you end up with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders in folder selected in step 5.

9) Insert DVD into burner
10) Make DVD > Burn
11) Use previous prepared project (folder to match from step 5 above), click next
12) Volume name, burner device, speed ( I use 4x regarless of media speed), burn DVD
13) Click Finish, DVD is burned/created.

14) Play in set top player.

I hope this helps you create a DVD. Let me know.

MSmart, Thank you!

I reinstalled DVD architect and tried to make a DVD, it finally made it to the burn process page but the DVD did not work. I used your instructions and voila success. I would buy you dinner if you were in town. I think rendering in .avi is the way to go and I was trying to put in a menu but deleting the menu is better for now. I'm still having an issue with DVD architect not responding. Before reinstalling I was not able to get to the burn page now I can. I think I will try this software on the computer I built for my son. Since it is a more current computer I will see if the software works better on it. Now I can start tweeking. You will have to let me know how good the Platinum edition is. Thanks again for the time and effort.

Edit: I did not reinstall the DVD architect update. I will reinstall that to see if it is a problem.

JOHN_D wrote on 10/10/2006, 1:05 PM
I installed update 3.0b and it screwed up the program.
rustier wrote on 10/10/2006, 3:57 PM
I know this is no consolation to you John, but your experience is the exception rather than the rule. I am not sure why you are having so many problems. I hope you get them all sorted out. Normally VMS is easy to install, easy to use. Perhaps when you get some time you can elaborate on the problem. There are some pretty savy computer guys in this forum.
JOHN_D wrote on 10/10/2006, 6:58 PM
Big mistake. I uninstalled everything again for the third time. When I click on the Icon to open DVD architect it just sits there, If there is a disk in the DVD drive it will not open. As soon as I eject the disk it opens but stops responding.
rustier wrote on 10/10/2006, 8:35 PM
installing or uninstalling really shouldn't affect how your dvd is drive is working. It sounds like you may have some issues with the computer itself. Are you running XP? if you are you can do a restore. You may have a corrupt driver - something like that. What kind of computer do you have?
