i am trying to match portions of a song to different changes in video and images changes. it is easy to do UNTIL the video clips become very short and / or the music beat changes... and then it does not preview correctly. how can i make the video changes match the music exactly and get it to preview correctly? thanks if you can help, i appreciate this forum very much. i hope that i have explained this well enough, i am not sure what what i am trying to do is called... thanks

When your clips get short, zoom in. (Use the up an down arrow keys.)

You can also click on the arrow to the left of your soundtrack and "open" the track to reveal the sound graph. Sometimes you can actually "see" the beat in the graph.

Also after zooming in I listern to the song in playback and hit the M-Key to place markers on say the snare drum beat or a crash cymbal or places I want the action to make quick changes in a row like a drum roll

I normally zoom in on the timeline and match the video to music by watching the audio waveform. You should be able to see the cymbal crash and other sounds in the waveform by watching for spikes.

If your problem is with the preview itself, as opposed to being able to edit things appropriately, then I've seen this happen too. Sometimes the combination of playing the music and doing real-time preview on effects or editing can be too much for your computer, even if it is reasonably powerful. This causes the playback in the preview window to be "off".

What I've done in these cases is to use the "make movie" option, and make sure to check "render loop region only" box in the dialog box. If you choose a short enough region (including the short section in question) then the render won't take long, and you can make sure your editing is happening as expected.
