Cannot Import Compressed .avi Files!

Hi, I have Vegas Movie Studio + DVD.

In the program i'm using to record footage my capture and video quality settings have to be on a certain size. I have to use a certain video codec to compress the video otherwise i end up with files that are 100 MB that should be 200 KB. Ok so I'm using ( Xvid MPEG - 4 Video Codec ) to compress the video. When using this codec I cannot import any .avi files into vegas at all. When I remove the codec then I can import all .avi files. I cannot record without codec. Can you please tell me what the problem is and how to fix it in detail? Or tell me of another codec that I should be using that works with vegas? I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you so much in advance!

Well, my suggestion would be to not capture in Divx format. Divx is a delivery format, not an editing format. Generally if you're dealing with Digital Video from your camcorder, the best format to capture in is just that, Digital Video (DV) - by capturing in DV you don't have the quality loss that happens with a highly compressed format like Divx and it's much easier for VMS to edit (since this is the format that VMS was primarliy designed to handle).

If you are using a highly compressed format because disk space is an issue, then you should get an additional disk drive - external hard drives that connect via USB or firewire are not terribly expensive.

I'm not recording digital video from a camcorder. It from a game on my computer, The Sims, It has an in game video recorder and when I record footage in game using Xvid MPEG - 4 Video Codec (Is that Divx really?) hmm... Than i can't import the files. See, After I record then the file is saved to a folder from which I then go into Vegas and import the file. But IF I use the aforementioned codec than it will not let me import.

You need to cross-reference the list of file types that Vegas will import with the list of file types your program will export. Bear in mind that .avi is a funny thing, becuase it's not actually a format - it's only a container for different formats, DV and DivX being 2 of them.

An easy way to go might be mpg. If your program can export as mpg, Vegas shouldn't have a problem importing it.

Hope that helps.
