cannot install and tech support form does not work

hi,

I have huge trouble installing the Update to Vegas 8 Pro :(

first, I tried to ask this question using the tech support web page. I fill all mandatory data and my question into the form and hit "Continue" but all I get is

" Operation Failed
Illegal parameter"

My issue is: Vegas 8 Setup fails at installing the prerequisite .net Framework 3.

"Requirements not met. Press OK to exit install."

What Requirements may I ask?

The PC is running Vegas 7 fine (.net 2 is installed as well as MS Visual Studio 2005 and MS Office and a bunch of other software)

The setup leaves a pile of log files in the temp folder but I find no hint what actually is missing.

I tried even installing on a second PC and it also failed.

Help please

It looks like you need to install the .net Framework v3 onto your machine.

ah yes, actually, the Vegas Setup does that for me - at least it tries and fails.

I went to your link and downloaded the installer and run this but it also fails. At least I get some more meaningful error message.

"Windows Presentation Foundation: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Windows Presentation Foundation. MSI returned error code 1603"

But whom to ask for help now? Sony? Microsoft? and how (not being in the US)? Damn dependencies :(

Ok - with that last one then it's not Sony at fault - there is something halting the installer for .net 3. Out of interest, have you run Windows Update recently? - That should install the update along with other useful (and some fairly important) updates.

That would be my first step.

Let me know...

And to ask the obvious, you are running WinXP SP2?

What version of the OS are you running (XP, Vista) service packs installed? I'm with Ken, you need to bring the OS up to date...

1603 is just MSI saying it failed.

There are commandline switches to run it in verbose mode to see exactly what the problem is.

I don't know the switches, of course, but they should be available on the MS website and/or the readme file if you download the .NET installation package rather than doing it "live".

A Google of the error shows a lot of people having it on all sorts of apps.

Hello all,

of course the PC in question is at latest update level.

Interestingly, I tried even a third one - a old Dell notebook that just recently got a fresh winXP on it. It had no .net stuff and no other components from MS apart from the OS - on this poor old computer the .net 3 (and Vegas) installation went fine without error!

Now back to my main machine which has various Microsoft stuff already running: I figured out that I could install the various Components from separate MSI packages. And doing so I finally got a meaningful error message: Some registry entry could not get written ... fixing that and .net 3 and Vegas are installed now.

Out of curiosity I tried that on the other machine where setup failed: here a different MSI caused a different failure, a very weird one: a certain file in Windows/system32 could not get overwritten. After fising that the installation went fone on this PC too.

So, conclusion: on a PC with no previous .net stuff installed everything is fine. If there is already some .net stuff you might run into weird issues.

Thanks Sony for depending on this crap :(

Yes Guys, I'm still a bit pissed about loosing so much time with the install but I'm getting better now with a working copy of Vegas 8 :)

thanks all
Jens
