cannot open Vista-edited veg's under XP

I have been busy with my project for a couple of weeks (or was it months?), and all the work was done under Vista x64, with either Vegas 8.1 or 8.0c, depending on current needs. Apart from the well known intermittent problems with opening project in the 8.1, all my projects run well with either version.

Having finalized (hopefully) the project today, I just thought: why not boot my XP for a while now? - and here I am, with the OS being quite noticeably more agile, but NONE of my projects (saved by the 8.0c under Vista) can now be opened under XP !

Vegas either reports unknown error, or wants me to search for "missing" clip files which are happily sitting in the same locations as before...

Anyone had a similar experience? And no - I never associated the .veg file extension with the 8.1 ...

I haven't tried to open any of my projects in XP after working on them in Vista, but I can try it when I get home in a couple hours. I just recorded some more footage for an existing project last night, and need to boot into XP to capture it tonight anyway. So I'll give it a shot and post again later.

if you're booting up in to a different OS then the drive letters will likely be different, and or the structure of the locations. That would explain the missing media, just tell it where it is and you should be fine.

with regards to the other problem do you have everything the same between one OS and the other with regards to plug-ins etc... that may be installed? I've had missing plug-ins mess up my startup more times than I can count when moving between OS's on the same machine and thinking... what???? (especially since it doesn't say that it's the plug-in missing causing the problem).

I just upgraded to Vista 64 and Vegas 8.1.

When opening a project created with 8.0b/Win XP, all the videos files came up as missing.

The data drive has the same exact mapping.

I re-linked each file individually using the dialog box that popped up when I opened the project. after linking the last file, I received an error message that the project could not be opened.

I really need to get the file opened so I can re-render the project (it kept locking up under Veg. 8.0b, which is one reason I upgraded). Any ideas?

Thanks,

Guy

First of all, what follows may not help with your problem, but let's see. When you install software like Vegas on a double-boot system, you may need to install it in two different folders, one for each boot OS. The reason is the following. Each piece of software stores things like "preferences", "options", "settings" in different locations. Sometimes, these settings are stored in the Windows registry. That doesn't create a problem in a double boot system, because the registry files are unique. Sometimes, the software installs settings files to subfolders located under a specific user name. That usually does not cause problems, because on a double boot system, those folders will, for the most part, also be unique.

But, if a piece of software stores it's settings information in a file in its own program folder or one of the program folder's subfolders, then the settings can be altered by booting the software from either OS. This potentially could create conflicts between the same version of the software booted from two OSes. It's a long shot, but you could try to uninstall Vegas under Vista and reinstall it under Vista to a different folder name.

Thanks everybody for input, but:

- of course I took care to install Vegas separately for each OS
- of course, I took care for my stored video disk partitions to be mapped to exactly same letter under both OS'es

Also, only a couple of weeks ago (when I wasn't so much occupied with my last project yet), I used to boot Xp quite often - if only to check whether the (new at that time) 8.0c was working under both my OS'es. And indeed, it did work -

- but now, after having saved my projects under Vista many times, they would not open under XP (in the same Vegas version, i.e. the 8.0c).

Go figure,

Piotr

i know this doesn't help, but I've done work on my wife's Vista laptop & transferred back & both between my XP desktop, all via my external drive. I didn't try it with 8.0c, but 8.0b worked no problem.

Why not boot back up to Vista & finish in there? There's no reason to use XP. and you said you just wanted to see if it still worked.

Just to make sure you've done this, have you just found one of the missing clips and then let vegas find all the rest for you rather than manually looking each one up?
