Cannot Publish to VCD or DVD. Please Help!

Video Factory has allowed me to create exactly what I envisioned for my parents 50th wedding anniversary - worked great. The problem is that I can't seem to get it published to VCD or DVD. First, I tried VCD. Bought a Plextor CD burner and rendered to MPGE1, but when I try to burn the disc, VF2.0C does not see the device. Sonic Foundry tech support provided suggestions which I followed - but still no go. So I tried burning the MPEG1 file using the OAK software that came with the Plextor. That gives me the message "To play these files in a DVD player, you have to convert them to Video CD compliant MPEG files first."

Next, I went to production company in attempt to go straight to DVD. Their only means of producing DVD was thru a digital video camera, requiring that I render to AVI which requires 4GB memory - far more than I have free.

Arrrgh - what to do? Buy an external drive to make room for the AVI file? Seek a better equipped production studio that can get the job done? Spring $70 for Roxio or Nero? On a related note, will VCD even play on the average DVD player or am I safer producing to DVD? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I can't offer much help but I'm confused as to why the OAK software would not like the VF format. VCD requires MPEG1 which VF will do out of the box. (SVCD requires MPEG2 which requires an additional plugin.)

There is really no reason you shouldn't be able to render using the MainConcept MPEG-1 with the NTSC-VCD template then use something else to write to CD.

Can you view your MPEG-1 output file on the PC? Did you use the NTSC-VCD standard?

Yes - I used NTSC-VCD and can view the MPEG-1 file - no problem. But you got me thinking that it's worth running through the complete process again, including rendering, which I'm doing presently.

Regarding SVCD, I have the plug-in for MPEG-2. I take it, however, that I need special software beyond VF to burn SVCD? What can I play SVCD on?

I've been using VF for editing then I use ULead's DVD Movie Factory to author the DVD (SVCD really) and burn to CD-R. I noticed another post on this bulletin board that says ULeads MF is on sale for $25. I just paid $45 for it.

As for the question "What can I play SVCD on?". That's just up to the DVD player. It either does or it doesn't just like VCD.

Roscoe - many thanks for your input. I've purchased and downloaded Ulead DVD Movie Factory (after the 30-day free trial mysteriously ended/timed-out after a few minutes). Ulead doesn't like the MPEG-1 nor MPEG-2 files I rendered with VF either -same as the OAK software that came with the Plextor. So, it's pretty clear my problem is with output from VF. I'm off to look at VCDhelp.com, dig into the actual MainConcept MPEG settings in VF, and perhaps to reinstall VF. Thanks again.
