I'll give you a bump....and a shot from the hip.

Is there any anti-virus or wireless networking interrupting the 'save as' to computer process?
Are all media files on their appropriate tracks?
Are you using any media files that are strangely not supported in the project?

I'll also say it took me a while on the vertical learning curve of this very deep and involved movie making program.
I'm on Platinum Movie Studio 9.0b which has worked well for me but it's over 2 years old now.

I'm no expert.....hope that helps.....carry on.

Can you tell us some things about your computer?

How much free, clean, defragmented space is on your C drive?

Are you editing to your C drive or to a second or external drive? If to a second or external drive, have you ensured that this drive is formatted NTFS rather than FAT32, as they come from the factory? FAT32 drives have a file size limit that can often choke video work.

I get this exact same problem but with Sony Vegas Pron 11. The "render as" dialog will not appear. PLEASE report your issue to Sony support using their online form here:

https://www.custcenter.com/app/ask

My own issue is logged as support ticket 111106-000021. Here's the description I provided to Sony (and they've not been able to yet provide me with any information that helped resolve the problem):

I have searched the forum for similar problems, but don't see any reported. In Sony Vegas Pro 11 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, both the "original" builds and the new 424/425 builds) I can't actually render any video.

When I select File > Render As... I am immediately presented with an error dialog that says:

"An error occurred while creating the media file .
Exception thrown by method called "

Yes, there's a space between "file" and the "." The dialog won't even report the error correctly. Funky. Similarly, there's no data after "method called ".

Oddly, I find that other "render" functions (that do not rely on the dialog in question) *do* work. For example, I can "real time render" to a wav file and the "Upload to YouTube" option (which renders and uploads without exposing the Render As dialog) both work.

Of course, any rendering that relies on showing the Render As dialog fails. So, for example, I *can't* do a Tools > Render to New Track, either. But I get a different error message when selecting that option. Vegas reports:

"An error occurred during the current operation.
Error 0x80131501 (message missing)"

To try to solve this issue, I uninstalled all versions of Vegas and did a fresh install of version 11 (the updated 424 build) and still see this behavior. I guess my system is missing something that the new funky Render As dialog expects to find?

Of course, this happens on my main editing machine while I do not see this behavior on other machines like my laptops.

Welcome any solutions you may have! I miss my Vegas...

Thanks and Best Regards,
Keith

Was a solution to this problem ever revealed or uncovered by anyone? It has just spontaneously started happening to me in Movie Studio 12. I did a render overnight OK. But next day this problem is present and persistent. Not sure what could have changed?

I have reported the problem to Sony support.... but I'm not holding my breath.

And of course... just my luck, I'm working to a deadline...

Solved:

Rendering to hard drive (and also the 'breaking' of Win 7's Aero) was caused by a recent MS update:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838

MS owes me a days worth of lost productivity!

Sherz,

Are you saying that updating the Platform caused you problems? I am asking because I avoided this update until I found out more about it.

Yes, this very recent update broke both Aero and Movie Studio's render to hard drive.

"Microsoft is aware of an issue some customers are experiencing when installing KB2670838 on certain laptop systems with hybrid graphics. We are looking into the situation and are considering blocking the update for systems that could be affected. Customers who are experiencing issues on systems that already have installed the update should consider uninstalling KB2670838."

This isn't the issue, which was around before the update and still is around, i.e. go "Render As" and instead of opening the render dialogue, Vegas crashes. It's random and if it's any consolation Vegas Pro 12 behaves the same. If you have experienced this, know you are not alone. You can guard against it: if the dialogue opens once, it reliably will again. So just start a new, untitled project, put maybe one clip on the timeline, go Render As, then if it works (which it seems to more often if there's not much on the timeline), dump the untitled project, load your real project and you will be OK.
