Canon 7D - Rendering from Vegas Pro 10c - AVCHD

Hi there,

I've been shooting on the 7D for awhile now and delivering commecials and stuff mostly on DVD;s and SD MPEG2 files, which is fine, it looks good etc.

However, recently I've been asked to output to Blu Ray for a job, so I picked the AVCHD plugin setting in Vegas Pro 10c (build 469) and tried to match the settings of a three mintue test .mov clip from the 7D ready to render an output file from Vegas to stick on the DVD Architect timeline for burning.

The default AVCHD 1920x1080 50i (I'm in Australia) setting seemed to be set up to do the job, but the render of my test clip (which is only about three minutes long) still seemed to take a long time ...

I'm not sure my machine is taking advantage of the CUDA thing (how do you check that by the way?) I'm running an NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT with the latest drivers, so I suppose it could be doing something good for the AVCHD renders.,, I know there was some bug with this in Vegas Pro 10a and/or b or whatever, maybe it's still not fixed?

Anyway, I guess my question to the forum is this: Does anyone use a render setting in Vegas Pro 10c that will let me render .mov files as produced by the Canon 7D without having to recompress the files everytime? Surely there is a way to match the render settings to the source clips which will make Vegas report that 'no recompression is necessary' ... so that the renders will zip through and only stop and render the edits like they do with other codec settings? Perhaps I have to go the Cineform route ... but I had a major nightmare with them in 2008 with all sorts of render problems and I really don't want to go back there.

Is there any way to render at full HD with a Quicktime setting matched to the H.264 wrapped encoding of the .mov files from the Canon 7D? I may just have the wrong codec setup at the moment for HD, if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great!

One interesting thing is that I notice that when I dump my test .mov file straight from the 7D onto the DVD Architect timeline and burn it to a Blu Ray disc after choosing the AVC option instead of the MPEG2 option in the Project Properties, the file burns onto the disc in no-time at all! I want my renders from Vegas (post a bit of editing) to do the same thing ... ie: end up in the same wrapper as a Canon 7D .mov file so they burn nice and quick in DVD Architect using the Advanced Video Codec setting!

(One curious thing as a bit of an aside and relating to DVD Architect settings ... why don't we have the option in the Project Properties to choose a Frame Rate of 25.000 progressive? ... the only option for 25 frames per second settings is 25.000 interlaced ... ... but my 7D shoots progressive?? ... you can chose 24.000 progressive and 23.976 progressive ... why can't you chose 25 progressive? - anyway, that's a bit off topic and is related to DVD Architect settings and 7D stuff... so I'll leave that until later unless someone knows something about this?)

Anyway, I hope some of this makes sense and I'm not making a total nob of myself after doing this Digital Video madness since 1987 with a Creative Labs Video Blaster card! I should know a thing or two about it by now ... and I haven't even started on 3D yet!

Maybe I'm just missing something totally obvious! Anyway, your help as always is appreciated.

Cheers,

Hi Darren,

I believe Vegas cannot smart render H.264. The long and variable GOP makes doing this very problematic.

BD does not support 25p, go figure. Seems you can fudge it though and it works. Look for a post by Megabit, he's got it to work.

Bob.

Hi Bob, great to hear from you again!

That's a bummer that Vegas can't 'smart render' the H.264 stuff because DVD Architect certainly 'smart burned' the 7D .mov when set to the AVC setting (compared to the MPEG-2 setting) ... it was so fast I thought it must have errored!

And BD doesn't support 25P? Oh well, I guess we're in the Antipodes Bob ...

I'll check on the Megabit post, thanks for that ... next time you're in the Highlands drop in and check out the new studio setup ... very very happy with it!

If you want to hook up in Sydney I'm playing drums with a three piece band at the North Bondi RSL on Saturday night (4th Feb) from about 8.30pm ... it's mostly The Clash, The Beatles, Crowded House, The Who, REM, Radiohead ... that kind of thing ... good fun.

Cheers mate,

Darren

Hi Bob,

I've been searching for the Megabit post but can't find it ... any chance you know how to track it down?

Cheers,
