Canon DV Preview problems.

With Vegas 5, whether I'm editing uncompressed avi, uncompressed quicktime, or standard DV , when using preview to external monitor with 4 different models of Canon DV cameras, I get a blue screen about every 4-5 seconds on the video monitor coming from the video out of the camera. Video from timeline displays properly the other 80% of the time.

I have tried 2 different 1394 ports. One adaptec and the other on the motherboard. Computer is a dual xeon 2.4 HPXW8000 workstation windows xp pro.

I'm pretty sure this is a Canon issue or setting somewhere that's not compatible. When I print to tape, the tape comes out fine, even though the preview on the monitor and the lcd shows the blue screen every 4-5 seconds. Tried different calbes, settings etc... to no avail. Tapes come out ok, I'm baffled. If I run the 1394 into another computer then on to analog montior, it works ok. Problem just is with using the canon's as a converter.

Canon XL1, Elura and 2 smaller consumer models were tested.

Any help or suggestions will be apprecitated. Someone must be using canon DV camera's.

It's the camera. I have 3 XL-1's of which I've used at least two for external preview purposes. One of them exhibits this symptom and another one does not. Not sure what the difference is - just know they they both do NOT work correctly.

I've only the XM2. You do need to activate the DV-IN from the menu . .why am I saying this? You know this already . .apologies if you've done it already ..

I use my Canon Elura with no problems like this. Works rather flawless. Sorry to hear your trouble.

I use a JVC SR-VS30U deck that I use for preview and have the same issue with V5. Fortunately it only happens intermittently but I never had the problem with V4....FWIW

I use a canon ZR-70 MC and have not noticed any problems.

(edit) On Vegas 4, however

Thanks for the help. I'm not going to be near the system for the next 4 days, but will keep checking. Maybe it's a version 5 issue, maybe it's me, maybe it's just voodo, but it is a problem.

I'll try to get some other preview setup to try.

I may have just discovered a V5 bug regarding this blue screen thing:
This morning I captured a tape, did some editing to it, printed back to tape then deleted the files from the HD. This afternoon I started a NEW project and captured another tape. The second frame on the timeline is a frame from the tape captured this morning....however I can only see this frame in the preview window and not the external monitor. I advance to the first or 3rd frame and they are visible on the external monitor. So when we see this blue screen external monitor perhaps we should check to see what is showing on the preview window and report back.
