Canon HF M41 AVCHD and Vegas Studio 9

I have a friend who just got a Canon HF M41 camera. It produces AVCHD files that don't seem to open in Vegas Studio 9. ?? .. The file don't preview at all and can't be placed on the Vegas timeline. Yet they play fine in Windows Movie Maker. Is he missing the right Codec? .. Or should they run out of the box?

If you shoot in MXP mode, you will probably be able to edit it in a Vegas MS project set up for AVCHD 1920x1080 (assuming you have the latest version of Quicktime installed on your computer).

Do you have Quicktime and is your Vegas project set up for 1920x1080 AVC? (Or am I wrong to assume Vegas MS 9 supports AVCHD?)

Make sure you also match your audio set-up, as the camcorder shoots in a variety of formats and in both stereo and 5.1 audio!

Thanks. The footage was shot in SP mode. My friend may not have Quicktime installed. I'll get that done and see ... I'm fairly sure by the behavior that the necessary Codec is missing. He installed all the other Canon software that came with the camera. You'd think Quicktime would have been included with that stuff.

Quicktime was not the problem. In fact, the Codec seem to be there for the AVCHD but Vegas Studio 9 just doesn't do it. No choice to render to HD .. and no choice of Project Properites for HD .. just SD ... Solution was to upgrade to Version 10.

Glad you found a solution in upgrading. Although, FWIW, version 11 is even more effective with AVCHD video.

And I do encourage you to only shoot your video at the highest quality level with these cams.
