I am considering purchasing a new camcorder for my upcoming vacation. Will Vegas Movie Studio work with this camera? I am a total novice with HD camcorders and don't want to blow money on this thing if I can't edit the output.
Yes, provided you get a suitable version. June 8, 2010, version 10 of the Vegas Movie Studio family is scheduled to be released. Whether you get version 9 or version 10, you must choose a version that supports AVCHD (the format the Canon Vixia HF S200 uses). You see, just saying Vegas Movie Studio is ambiguous, because there is a whole family of versions, and a whole series of versions for each of those family members.
Thanks David. I currently have version 9 Platinum with the latest patches applied. Is that acceptable?
I have Windows 7 on a laptop that I'll probably be using for editing. I guess I'll be upgrading to version 10 when it's available. My laptop is USB only with no firewire. I hope that because the camcorder I'm considering is USB only with SDHC cards that I will be OK for getting the video transferred from the camcorder to the computer.
Hi Steve, You will have no trouble transferring your footage to the laptop, either through USB or with a card reader if your laptop has one.. VMSP is able to edit AVCHD. The catch is with, say, an overclocked i7 quad, you will be able to smoothly play back just one track of AVCHD - that's with no transitions, no added audio, no full res preview. Currently several cheaper editing programs do a better job of playing back AVCHD, so hopefully v10 will at least match those. Otherwise, welcome to the world of trascoding, intermediates and proxies (despite all this, you won't regret getting the HFS).
