Canon XF100 & VMS?

EGS wrote on 11/3/2012, 1:36 PM
I'm considering an upgrade to my Canon Vixia HFS100 by adding a Canon XF100, but am finding conflicting info. Can I import the Canon XF100 media files directly into VMS10, or will I need to convert them to some other format first?

From the Canon site:

"The XF100 utilizes Canon's XF Codec – a file-based MPEG-2 compression with an MXF File Wrapper that ensures the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure, metadata and non-linear editing (NLE) systems."

Canon XF100 specs:

Will the Canon XF100 files integrate well into Vegas; any problems/issues? Can VMS cut between Canon XF100 files and Canon Vixia AVCHD files for a 2-camera shoot? Thanks !!!

I would very much recommend that, if you're going to shoot with a $3000 semi-pro camcorder, you use the professional rather than consumer version of Vegas.
MXF if not a consumer video format.

Thanks Steve, but is that file type compatible?

Vegas Pro supports pretty much every pro and semi-pro format out there, as this chart shows.

I had already checked that chart, but did not see Canon's "MPEG-2 MXF File Wrapper" file format listed (although MPEG-2 is listed). So my original question is: "Can I import the Canon XF100 media files directly into VMS10, or will I need to convert them to some other format first?" Thanks !!!

You won't find many users purchasing and using a higher end Canon camera and asking about usage inside VMS.

The answer is the MXF wrapped Mpeg2 codec works just fine in VegasPro. If you attempt this, you must follow the instructions given with the camera, don't invent your own workflow - it will not be happy for you.

Pity Mfrs don't have common Standards so we consumers aren't the last to learn of issues.

Surely the easiest scheme is to take a memory card to yr dealer, format it and record some footage?
- Then, back home you can see whether it imports correctly, or not.

That there is no clear "yes" rather points to . . . . but then.
