Canon XLH1 + Vegas workflow

I know this kind of question has been asked a million times..but I don't have a spare minute to search through past threads and was hoping for a quick answer.

Anyone out there with experience using the XLH1 with vegas....what was your workflow? How did you capture? Can you capture with the Vegas capture or have to use a third party software? Should I just downconvert in the cam...if so...how do i do that and capture into vegas?

Editing...how should I go about it...what I mean is...make intermediary (whatever you call 'em) files to edit with? Obviously my final output is going to be SD but I would like to render and save an HDV or HD version.

Sorry about some of the simple questions...i'll only have this camera for a day to shoot and log tapes so I need it right the first time. Also, can Vegas handle the 24f frame rate from the canon...someone told me it can't capture it or edit it or something of that nature...so I was told not to use it? Should I just shoot at 1080i and convert to 23.98p through Vegas?

Final Note....i'm using Vegas 6

Thanks guys
Jeremiah

What you'll want to do is shoot, and capture everything immediately. Vegas will know what to do with the footage on capture, as will Cineform. Just be sure to keep the original m2t files along with any converted files.
yes, Vegas manages the 24f just fine.
You can capture via Vegas or Cineform.

When capturing with vegas do i just keep the NTSC DV settings...or are there different setting I need to ...well...set. Sorry for these questions..haven't worked with HDV yet and this job came up at the last minute...

thanks for your quick response

are u capturing within Vegas itself or with VidCap??

HDV will only work within the Vegas system.. NOT vidcap.. vidcap is for DV only...

The Canon XL-H1 does downconvert HDV footage to DV in-camera and outputs that DV via firewire. Just select it to do so in the menu options.

Spot, you knew that....you have so much friggin' information & knowledge in your brain, it's getting mixed up a bit. *smile*

XjerX, Vegas can capture, edit and output 24F hdv footage just fine. it was the first NLE program that could. So you'll be fine shooting 24F.

Yeah, I did. It's even got a call out in my book. In my brain, I keep associating 24p HDV with JVC, duh!
Thanks for the save, Shannon.
