I just noticed that the ADVC 100 is no longer presented on the Canopus site. Instead, there is the 110.
Apart from being white and since we can't compare with the older product, is there a difference at all?
ADVC-100:
- Two sets of inputs (front & rear)
- accepts NTCS/PAL inputs
- needs DC adapter (included)
- comes with 4-pin/6-pin Firewire cable
- includes S-VHS/Composite adapter for rear video input
ADVC-110:
- One set of inputs (front)
- accepts NTSC/PAL/SECAM inputs
- uses 6-pin Firewire for power, DC adapter sold separately ($$)
- comes with 6-pin/6-pin Firewire cable
- can convert analog audio w/o video
Rest of the specs look similar. I don't know why they took out the second set of inputs, and then charged more for it.
Oh, I think (ont the 110) they call it "inputs" and "outputs" but both connectors (ie front and rear) are in fact "intelligent" ins and outs sou you could use them as you wish.
Doesn't seem to be much difference except for the audio converting you can do without video...
I'd suggest checking out the Canopus forums for more specific info. On one level Canopus are a great mob, local guys down here try to be very helpful, heck I posted a question on the global forum and got a local techs phone number. I think their biggest problem is things get lost in the translation.
Lots of ADVC-300 owners have been wingeing for years about the very poor documentation and that dreaded D1 cable yet there's been not a word out of Japan.
Bob.
They had a problem with the ADVC100s in that they would go up in smoke somtimes. As far as I'm concerned it was bus power on the 6 pin cable that caused the bad smell and smoking chips. I'm on my third and never plug a 6-pin cable between it and my computer (any more). Only 4-pin, which shouldn't carry bus power.
The 110s came out after they started having this trouble with the 100s. Also, I remember calling them after I first got my 100 to ask if it could run on batteries or bus power. Maybe many others asked as well. However I think the big change was mostly due to the problem with the smoke and bad smells from the dieing 100s. They replaced the first one free and charged me 70 bucks for the next one after that.
BTW, when my ADVC100 died it took a lot of other firewire components with it. You're probably better off with the 110.
Like what kind of trouble? I've got a 100 that occasionally "locks up" and ceases to process video, at which time it does not respond to button presses and won't do anything until you power it on and off. But it doesn't smell like smoke!
Geeze I feel lucky. Never had any problem after two years of use. I only use it for VHS analog transfers. RCA's in from VHS and firewire out to computer. To be fair, it's worked well for me.
