Canopus Video Demo as a training tool for us

I am sure many have already seen this beautiful piece of editing art, but I thought I would put it up in the context of, "Can Vegas do all of this?" type of discussion. I think I will slowly go through it and try to teach myself how to do as many of these effects and techniques as I can. I would be great to hear opinions and such from others.

Is this as good as I think it is or did all of its fancy just turn an old man's head like the girl in the red dress in Matrix?

DD - Thanks for sharing this!

I was also going through the FAB Canopus production mentally "ticking-off" what I thought I could do and couldn't do with my V4.

All the Usual Suspects, yes. Apart from the twisting and scalable graphics . . . hmmmmm.... Is this an option within V4? Or is this something that the long waited for Boris Plugin will do?

In any event, this Canopus OPUS has made me feel even more secure with my V4 - yeah?

A Canopus RES 100 is > 7,000 CAD. Also, as the previuous poster pointed out, you CAN do that sort of work with Vegas, jsut takes a bit longer.

looks like it would take an editor a year to do! or a thousand monkeys five years.

Grazie, I was hoping a few people would enjoy seeing it. I wish I had the skill to actually go through it piece by peice and post a "how to" on each section. There is something about watching something and then doing it that really makes it sink in and stick to your brain. I find as I get a little older that actually [getting it to stick] does come harder, just like dear old dad said :)

You know I could care less if it take the software only Vegas a little more time to do something like this. The very fact that a PC and a software only solution like Vegas COULD do this level of work still amazes me.

SO, picking one that seems more simple, ie the "bird thing", anybody got a comment on how that is done?

pretty cool video. I hear you have to buy three packages to get all the goodies. Canopus knows how to market their software. If all this can be done with Vegas, then gees, I need to spend more time in front of my NLE.

That video shows a lot of versatility. If Vegas had 3-D stuff like Canopus, I could delete the Canopus entry level package from my computer. Today, I still use it when I need some of the cool SoftXplode 3-D transitions from Canopus. Cool transitions are the brunt of a lot of criticism, but, visually good ones can really add a lot to the right kind of video.

Bump :-) Ok, all you gurus or SOFO, any comment on how you would do the bird thing in Vegas?

I could do it in a number of ways. One way that I just tried was: Pan/Crop (with stretch to fill frame / do not maintain aspect), the Border FX (initially set to solid border, then later take the width to 0, switch to blur, then increase width), and Track Motion (to position the stretched frame back to desired location and aspect). It's a reasonable facsimile of that effect, but not exact. I think you'd have more creative control over sizes and the border to feather transition using a Solid color and Cookie Cutter for the border, than a Gradient generator for the feathered edges.

Thanks very much. Is there any way you can throw your veg and small source footage on the ftp? Is it is too much hassle, no problem at all as I am sure you are very busy.

On a side note, maybe we can get Satish to look at it and perhaps come up with a few additions to his plug-ins to allow a little more straightforward set up. Well, one can dream.

/edit: better yet, maybe somebody can use Satish's new Wink software to do a visual tutorial and show how to do some of these effects. That was what it was designed for I think and it would sure be a great thing to try it out on.
