CAnt Capture HDV from CAnon

This may be the worst possible technical combo of using Sony Software with a Canon camera...but its what I gotta work with...Sony pro 8.0b build 217 and Canon XH-A1 PAL.
I can capture in SD mode ok fine. Vista recognizes camera correctly as a DV camera.
When I change camera to HDV mode, vista still recognizes as DV camcorder.
OK
Vegas recognises camera as IEEE1394 device in SD mode.
but when I try to change capture settings to IEEE1394/mpeg2 (HD) device, it can "see" the camera.

Sony and Canon helpdesks all say the same thing..update drivers, reinstall, blah blah blah... I am an experienced system builder with 6+ years doing this. but this problem has me beat.

Has anyone out ther successfully used this cam or any other Canon with Vegas Pro 8 ?

We capture A1 pal 1080i with V7.
V8 captures 1080i only. 1080p just flakes out

gawd knows what im gonna do if they dont fix this.. I havet tried CS3, but i will if 1080p wont capture withing vegas... i might not have a choice...

does anyone know if hdv split will capture canon 1080p?

I played with the A1 a year ago for several weeks, and captured 1080p in both Vegs 7 and HDVsplit just fine. One thing I remember though were red frames here and there in Vegas - never knew why.
