Where did these AVI files come from? What software or device made them? They were probably compressed with some codec that Vegas doesn't know about yet.

Recorded the files with fraps 2.1 from cs demos, i compressed it with Dr. DivX(latest), same as my friend does and it works for him

You probably need a DivX codec (outside of Dr. DivX) installed. Better yet, don't compress them. Us the files as captured without compression. You'll get much better results.

Ok, thanks it works if i dont compress it before, but i want to make the clips smaller :) do you know why it doesnt work with the compressed files?

Better to work with the originals on the timeline and then, when you're finished, compress the new video out to Divx or some other format.

I believe Vegas has not yet learned that Divx exists as a decoder on your system. Try installing the codec (again?) and see what happens.

You won't like this answer but it would be easiest. Buy an extra hard drive (7200 RPM) just for AVI files. Figure about 13 Gigs for each hour of AVIs. This is non-compressed AVIs. As big of an extra hard drive as you can afford. Because no matter how big it is, you'll wish you had a bigger one in no time. Then once you load in your AVIs you can compress them into what ever you want Divx, DVD, VCD, SVCD. Once you convert them you can erase the AVIs from your hard drive and start over. It will make everything so much easier for you than trying to make videos with only a couple of gigs to spare on your hard drive. Much easier to make editing adjustments with AVIs since you can't get a better picture to work with. (except high definition)

Read this post, specifically erratic's responses. He seems to have a good handle onDivx problems.

DV compressed files are about 13GB/hour. Uncompressed full frame AVI files are around 100GB/hour.

I'm sorry. Technically, you're right. I just thought he was using something even more compressed than a windows style AVI. (like a Divx)
