cant import ~4.3gig .avi file, error msg, +audio, -video

Hi all, I have a weird problem: I have a project open that is just one large .avi file I've imported (all whole, no other clips, no editing, it's about 4,333 GB). As soon as I import it in, the last 20-30 sec or so turn completely black, but the audio still plays on them. The .avi itself, of course, does not have this problem and plays all the way through in media player. Furthermore, when I try to print to tape, when it reaches the point of sound cut-off, I get a non-descript error message saying something failed, and the process stops, and everything becomes unstable. I've heard something of a 4 gig file limit, BUT I thought that was not the case on WinXP NTFS drives (which is what I have). I have two NTFS drives, one with the OS and VV3.0b (30gig) and the other housing all the footage and work (60gig). Help me please, what's going wrong???

If an AVI file is going to be over 4G (or is it 2G?) it needs to be an OpenDML / AVI2 format file. Vegas supports OpenDML AVI2. Perhaps this file is acting more like an old-style AVI file and the section past 4G can't be seeked to. Vegas uses file seeking and frame/sample fetches, whereas Media Player just starts playing at the beginning and just keeps going. I suggest trying to "seek" media player in the end parts to see if it can seek in the sections past 4G.

Then again 20-30 seconds at the end is far less than the 333M that's beyond 4G, so this could be somethese else completly, like a corrupt file. What's the source of the file?
