Has this ever been possible before in Vegas?

I don't recall any discussion about editing .3gp. It's also probably heavily compressed.

Thanks Buster,
Well I don't know, I've never even heard of .3gp but was hoping it was possible.
I believe you're right that it's heavily compressed and probably would look awful on TV but is there freeware that would convert it to .avi to enable using it?
Thanks again Buster,
Randy

I think this never worked before because of a Quicktime limitation.

Try SUPER. Here's their website -

http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

I've used it in the past to convert one video file to another. Here's a summary of what it does.

I forgot, it's FREE.
-----------------------

SUPER © Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer.
A GUI to ffmpeg, MEncoder, mplayer, x264, mppenc, ffmpeg2theora & the theora/vorbis RealProducer plugIn.

If you need a simple, yet very efficient tool to convert (encode) or play any Multimedia file, without reading manuals or spending long hours training, then SUPER © is all you need. It is a Multimedia Encoder and a Multimedia Player, easy-to-use with 1 simple click.

yeah, super rocks.

I believe .3gp is a mobile phone codec. I don't know if it's used elsewhere.

Randy,
While I haven't tried V8 yet, I have tried previous versions.
I have the latest QT installed and tried to add a bunch of clips to the V7 timeline. All came from the same mobile - Motorola Razr v3t - and of about 18 clips I could only add two. It complained about the rest as being corrupt. All clips were taken the same day.

Guess what? V6 had no problem whatsoever with the exact same clips.

All the clips were taken off the mobile by connecting to the computer via USB.

I have V8 trial on my laptop and I'll go and try and report back.

Tom

I guess we have a reportable bug.
I have QT 7.2.0.240 installed.
V6 has zilch problem opening all 18 files.
V7 can only open two of them and complains about the others
V8 can only open the same ones that V7 can. SURPRISE!!!

I'll report this to SONY in the morning....

Yes, I'll vote for Super. It's a fantastic application for converting between video formats.

There's another similar tool for converting audio formats called Switch. This has proved invaluable to me, too.

Thanks everyone, I'll try Super and then Switch if that doesn't work...hopefully these clips will be worth the trouble.
Thanks again,
Randy

SONY support got back to me to say this should be fixed in the upcoming 8.0a update. No ETA yet.

We recommend that you install QuickTime 7.2 which is the version currently available. It fixes a number of bugs in earlier versions.

I do have QT 7.2 installed. This problem also exists in 7.0e, but not in 6.0d.
Something had to have regressed.

I dropped a 3gp file into both Vegas 8 and Vegas 7e timelines. There were no issues. From the clip's Project Properties:
Streams
Video: 00:00:25.400, 10.000 fps, 176x144x24, H.263
Audio: 00:00:25.600, 8,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Mono, AMR Narrowband

I do have the latest version of Quicktime installed - 7.2 running on Win XP x64.

At the end of the day, 3gp is just a wrapper - designed for mobile phones. You may still need the appropriate codecs installed to decode the streams.

Hi Robert,
Please go back to the beginning of this thread and take a look. Out of some 18 clips taken at the same time all but two cannot be opened by either 7.0e or 8.0 while 6.0d has no issues with any of them.

Same machine, same QT, same codecs.

Quick update to the topic.

Still cannot open some .3GP files with 8.0a. Problem appears to be same as before.
Have reported back to SONY.

I'm running Vegas 8.0b on a 32-bit Windows Vista SP1. I installed QT 7.4. The QT player shows my 3gp clips to be good shape. But, when I dropped a 3gp clip into Vegas, only the audio showed up, no video.

Is this yet another twist of this problem?
