Capture Artifacts

I shot a tape on a DVX100a. I then dumped the tape into my PC using my JVC HR-DVS3U using Vegas 4's capture utility.

The AVI's have occasional frames with square artifacts. I've noticed about one frame with artifacts per minute, but they are spaced in a completely random fashion. I've uploaded a layered Photoshop example here.

If I capture the tape a 2nd time, the artifacts are on different frames.

Is the problem caused by my deck, or by the software? Any solutions?

It's likely your deck. Have you cleaned heads? I'm not terribly interested in downloading a zipped file from an unknown source, so can't see your images, but transfer from deck to drive is just that, a transfer. Artifacts are nearly always related to deck problems.

Here are some JPG's FYI:
With artifacts
Without artifacts

There is also a horizontal shift in part of the image too, but not across the entire width.

I'll try cleaning the heads, but the deck only has about 20 hours on it.
