Capture: Camera for Video / Audio from Aark ?

Okay, am I missing something here...I can capture video (via firewire) from the camera, but it's also capturing the audio from the built-in camera mic...this is not what I want to do.

Shouldn't I be able to capture audio from my Aark 20/20 while capturing the video from the camera at the same time? Or does the DV Firewire connection force the Vegas Capture utility to pull both video and audio from the firewire connection?

If I start the Video Capture software before I connect the camera, I can choose from all the different Aark audio inputs...but once I connect the camera (via firewire), the audio input selections become greyed-out (even though I can still see which one I previously selected), and then all captured video includes only the audio from the camera mic.

Am I overlooking some setting, or is it just not possible to capture your audio from a audio card rather than the camera?

Even if it were possible to capture the audio from an audio card at the same time as you were capturing the video via 1394 it isn't a good idea. Your audio will go from D->A->D which doesn't help.

Have to switched the camera into VCR mode?

When all is working properly the digital video and audio all comes down the 1394 cable and you get an exact bit copy in the AVI file of what's on the tape.

I guess I should clarify things...I can already capture A/V from a DV tape without any problems.

What I want to do is use the camera in real-time just for the video only, but also capture a completely separate audio signal (non-camera related) coming in from my Aark 20/20, such as music. I'm only using a Sony TRV22, which offers a additional mic input that I could use, but the automatic gain compensation makes using that audio input fairly useless (and frustrating).

After reading the somewhat informative help files in vegas, I'm beginning to think that it will take a separate ADDV device that will allow me to just use the camera alone, and then choose what audio input device I need to use.

I'm beginning to think when Vegas Capture connects (via firewire) with the Sony camera, it's an all or nothing situation, meaning that all video and audio will only come from the camera itself. But I'm still experimenting with things in case I've overlooked something.

I don't think you're going to get it to work the way you want it to.
VidCap, which is actually a separate program, captures to an AVI file containing the video and audio from the camera.
To capture (actually it's record) audio, you need to create an audio track and arm it for record and press the master record icon on the T/L. You can capture as many tracks of audio as the system will handle but I see no way you can also capture video at the same time.

However, why not do as I have done may times. Record vision and bad sound with the camera to tape and use Vegas to record (not capture!) audio from your good sound card. Just remember to slate the start of every shot with a clapper (and to be certain the tails as well) and then syncing them up later is a snap.
