to capture analog video? Or an AV-DV converter?

I like the ATI AIW line. They're not expensive (you can get an ATI AIW 7500 or 8500 cheap now, real cheap) & the mpeg-2 quality is nice.

DV is easiest to edit.

I'd use a DV device that can convert analog to digital on the fly. Many but not all cameras can do it.
Use a standard firewire card to capture, about $25 from newegg or less if you shop around more.

I use the Canopus AVDC-1394 card. It's both an AV to DV converter and a DV capture card. Canopus products are quite good. You can check them out at www.canopus dot com
