Capture device not available

Steven Myers wrote on 7/23/2004, 4:41 AM
When I attempt to capture video from my USB-2 interface, I get an error message saying the device is either not turned on or is in use by another application.
Neither of these is true. Video Capture 5.0 sees and correctly identifies the device, but just won't connect to it.
The device works fine when used with the various freebie apps that come with it, with my DVD burner, etc.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I'm curious too.

Capturing to a USB 2.0 device is quite common. I do it with my Maxtor 1-Touch HD all the time. Capturing from a USB port is less common and it would have to be USB 2.0 not 1.0.

What is the camera or DV device you are using?

The brand name/model is ADS Tech DVD Xpress. It's a little box that accepts either S-VHS or composite video (from a VCR, for example) and sends it via USB 2.0 to the computer.

Why the Video Capture 5.0 software thinks some other app is hogging the USB input, I have no idea.

Make sure you have Device Control turned off in the capture preferences for Vegas Capture. I don't know if that's causing your problem, but I do know that having Device Control enabled for firewire devices that aren't controllable does cause problems.

For a description of the interface, please see my reply to InterceptPoint.

Beyond that, yes, USB 2.0 works fine for transferring video from external devices. My MiniDV camcorder has both USB and Firewire outputs. Sony Video Capture 5.0 software seems to like my Firewire option better, so that's what I use in that situation.

Thanks, Scott. That was the first thing I tried after I browsed through the on-line help. No success.
