It's 18min. and change. Vegas splits the avi files at 4 gigs on Win. 98 and ME. Works fine here on ME. Does the same on capture. You just load the first file, and the whole things shows up on the timeline or in VidCap.

The size limit is due to the properites of the OS, like WIN 98 which uses FAT 32 or earlier and even worse versions of FAT (File Allocation Table). If you upgrade to XP for example, you can use much improved NTFS (new type file system) and your files can grow as large as your free space on your drive. There may be some real or theoretical limit to how big a AVI file can get, I've made a few that topped out over 50GB, which is pretty big. <wink>

But the capture still takes? The reason I ask is that my kid just did a play that ran about 22 minutes. I ran it all on one take and need to know if I have to monkey with anything to get a clean grab.

Thanks.

You shouldn't have any problems. Vegas will just keep splitting files as needed. myfile01-02-03 and so on and they should remain seamless when worked on, so if you're using FAT 32 not a real problem. The issue is more of a annoyance if for example you want to export out of Vegas to some other software, you'd have to load those multiple files in that other application, then hope it can join them back together again. If you do it all within Vegas, should be smooth sailing.

The NTFS limitation is about 16 exabytes or 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 bytes.

See here for Microsofts FAQ.

Lets see here... carry the 4...

That works out to a capture limit of 8x10^10 minutes, or about 148,000 years.

Damn! I knew Vegas Video had a limitation somewhere!

OK, this is what I've been looking for. Can someone tyell me how to set it up so that it captures into different files? Everytime I try, it just stops recording at the 4 GB limit and doesnt roll over into another file. Do I need to set it up to do this or what? I'm getting an ul;cer form this and it seems so simple, yet I cant find an answer anywhere!
Thanks
Chris

I don't think there is anything to set up. In VidCap, you can check under Options / Preferences / Disk Management and make sure that Maximum size per DV clip is checked. I believe the default value is 4,096MB or something like that. I reduced it to 4,000 to leave a little leeway. But there isn't anything you can check/uncheck to make it roll over or not.

Do keep in mind that only VidCap / Print to tape will work with all the files automatically. After you've captured into several files, you'll have to manually place each of those files on the timeline.

Thanks again Chienworks,
But as you told me on the other post, I cant do this anyway if I'm not capturing in DV. Guess I'm out of luck. Looks like hours of fun doing it manually.
Thanks again,
Chris
