The DV format itself is higher resolution than Hi8. A cheaper DV (or Digital8) camera's optics and CCD become the limiting factor, not the format itself. As well, you don't lose more information during the transfer, since it's already in the digital domain.

A further benefit is that once you've captured your clips, and used some in a piece, as long as you keep around the right index files and DV tapes, you can delete the huge AVI files from you hard disk, and sometime later if you want to edit the project some more, you can re-capture the original footage or just what you used in the project. And since it's digital, the end result will be identical.

Finally, you can use the digital camera to capture from your analog camera, instead of using the capture device you currently have. In fact, nearly all of the Digital8 cameras can play Hi8 / 8mm tapes and convert to digital on-the-fly into the computer (note: you cannot "recapture" these clips as they have no timecode).

The hardest part is picking which device to get <g>.

You'll find that the additio of a DV cam will greatly expand your capabilities. Your Hi8 cam (if of recent vintage and good quality, especially if it has S-video in/out) will continue to be useful in shooting situations . . . there are some advangates . . . longer shooting times being one. The DV cam will be great for transfer of those and previous analog footage that you may have, and, as Dennis mentioned, it's wonderful to be able to pass footage back and forth between cam/computer without concern for generational loss.

Vegas also allows you to use your DV cam to pass long projects through the DV cam on to a VHS/Beta VCR without the 1 to 1-1/2 hr time restriction imposed by the current length of the 8mm cassette (recording time for an 8mm cassette is cut in half when you move to DV format).

Your duping quality to VHS will be surprisingly good if both the cam and VCR have SVHS inputs/outputs.

Go for the DV if your budget allows. You will be happy with it.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I now have another device on my wish list. Hopefully, I won't have to wait to long to get it.
