Capture from a dvd.

I have some material on a dvd that I would like to put into another project. Is there a way to capture FROM a dvd into a MF3 project? Yes, I know I could hook up a set top player and play it through my dv deck, but I was hoping there was a lossless way of taking the digital material right off the disc and onto my hard drive so that I could use it in another project.
Thanks.

Well, the file on the DVD is in a compressed format MPEG2 so even if you got the file to your hard disk, the results after editing would not be that good.
There are other posts on the topic of AVI vs. MPEG taht you might want to read.

I use a Hauppauge WinTV card. I have it hooked up thus:

Cable TV in from wall ----> Combo DVD/VCR -----> WinTV card in computer.

That way, I can capture off of TV, VCR or DVD directly into Screenblast.

Thanks for the replies. I will look for the other posts as well. But the reality seems to be that once it is on a dvd, I can not go back to the same quality as the .avi. So the real moral of the story would be to never throw away any source material. (Is that possible?)
Gerry, that is the method that I wanted to avoid. I can play the dvd in a set top player and patch the svideo to my dv deck and then to the computer. Then resave it as a .avi file but I was hoping there would be a way to eliminate the analog step.

I think you will loose quality compared to the original .AVI that you had to create the DVD.
The alternative is to save all your captured AVI on the DV tapes or on a DVD (as regular data files)
Storage space will always be an issue when it comes to video.
