Capture from analogue device ?

I'm sure that a year or so ago I captured video from an anlogue PCI capture card to Vegas (4 ?). Now in Vegas 5 I am trying to do the same with a USB2.0 video capture widget, unsuccessfully.

Vegas (5c) recognises the device, but seizes up with an error message - " The device 'USB 2.0 capture' could not be opened. Please make sure it is turned on and ...."

As I said, Vegas and Sony Video Capture 5 both seize up (rest of system works) and ViodCap cannot even be terminated from WIn Task Manager. XP will not close down.

I gather Vegas is better suited to DV, but if it recognises a capture device, it presumably should work with it ?

The capture device is a generic one made (maybe) by TelSignal.

Any ideas ?

First, USB devices generally are unreliable. Second, they rarely work correctly in my experience. :-)

A Firewire device works much better.
I'm assuming you've disabled DV device control in the capture utility?
Just because the system or even Vegas recognizes the device doesn't necessarily mean it will function correctly or at all.

Hi Spot,

The capture device does work OK in XP Movie Maker, but who wants to use THAT !

You can also capture in Movie Maker and then edit in Vegas. The end result is the same.

Hi Geoff,

I totally had the same experience with USB connectors, A PAIN! Spot is so right on that one (as always!)Ü

I second Spot, go DV! Goodluck!!

That sounds like a good workaround. But still, is there a reason why Vegas does not recognise (or work with) a device that Movie Maker does?
