Capture from JVC GY-DV300

A search showed no hits for this question, although I did learn that Pinnacle has a product with the same model as this JVC camera. For some time I have been capturing from a Sony TRV25 MiniDV camera. Now I'm using Vegas 4.0 (+DVD) Everything works fine still with the Sony. The OS is Windows 2000 Pro.

I have borrowed a JVC GY-DV300 (3-CCD MiniDV camera) and when I plug it into the Firewire it is found and the driver is loaded, etc. Shows just fine in the Device list but I cannot control the camera nor even with manual playback does anything appear in Vegas 4 Video Capture. None of the transport controls are active. Don't get any error messages either. Switch the Firewire to the other camera and viola, everything works with it.

Any help appreciated.

Wmunn,

I read about the JVC and Canon camera's months ago. Tech support recommends that you que and play the video, and transfer it to tape with the manual camera controls. I have had limited success with this--a longer transfer still times out. You may wish to try this approach.

I have changed my approach entirely lately, since even my trusty Sony Digital 8 is having some problems (4.0b?). I only drop back to DV tape so I can copy them to VHS for wider distribution. I now just render to Mpeg2 (smaller than DV anyways), burn a DVD and then use the DVD to copy--it records just fine, since it doesn't have Macrovision. I even picked up a new Zeniz xbv342 DVD/VHS player that will copy directly from the DVD to the VHS tape. I just tried it last night and it seems to work flawlessly--although the VHS resolution is always disappointing (clean, but lower res), compared to the DVD version. This way I can duplicate tapes without wear on the camera, using less disk space, and the unit is self contained (I monitor it on the PC screen via an ATI all-in-wonder Radeon).

I hope this helps.

Did you ever resolve this?

JVC DV300 actually works rather well, allowing rapid accurate frame capture. The only thing you need make certain is to put it into VTR mode.

Camera mode will transfer and allow you to capture. But you must put the DV300 into camera mode after you start transfer. You can then view or capture.
