Capture from VCR

BigEgg wrote on 9/18/2004, 6:22 AM
Hi all,
I'm new to Vegas world but I'm sure I'll love it.

I'm trying to capture a videotape from my videorecorder but I don't see any video (audio is ok). So I tried to do it with another old software and everything seems ok (audio and video).

As I want to work only with the new Vegas Studio, how can I caputre video with Vegas?

I forgot to say that I don't have any problem when I capture from MiniDV.

you can use the "pass through" on your camcorder-- iow, connect your VCR to your camcorder, and "pass through" your analog audio and video to the Firewire output. Remove your tape cassette in your camcorder to keep it from powering down after 5 minutes.

I'm not sure if I can do it with my Sony DCR-PC6E because I don't have any IN line.

But why can I capture from VCR with another software (should I say the name?) and I cannot do it with Movie Studio 4?

Does "another software" begin with a P? And is your capture card from the same company? Some of Pinnacle's hardware will only work with their software.

Yes to the first question and No to the second one. I have the ATI Rage Theater and my graphic card is an Asus Radeon A9600XT.

A couple of months ago I tested Screenblast Movie Studio 3 and it worked well.

Anyone with a possible solution?

What format are you capturing to?

The ideal format for digital video capture is AVI/NTSC-DV.

The ideal format for analogue capture is MJPEG.

I'm capturing in AVI/PAL because I'm in Europe but I don't it's the format that makes the difference.

I mean... why I was able to capture with Screenblast 3 and now with Movie Studio 4 I cannot? The computer and the VCR are the same.

MS allows you to specify any capture program you've got installed - have you tried using MS3's from MS4?

This may seem silly, but did you instal MS4 into a directory entirely different from MS3? I heard that you need to do that. (I did and have had no capture problems.)

Don't know for sure this will help, but it is worth trying:

In the video capture application, choose Options -> Preferences from the menu. On the "General" tab, look for an option called "Enable DV Device Control". It should be the first option.

For capturing from VCR, you'll want this unchecked.

It's possible that the default for this option changed between versions, which would explain what you're seeing. Also, search on "enable DV device control" here in the forum, as I recall there have been other discussions about this option.

Reply to dand9959:

When I purchased MS4 I uninstalled Screenblast 3.

I followed the instructions of GOGIANT but nothing has changed. Only audio and no video :-(

It's a cludge, but I'd reinstall MS3 into a new folder and then take a copy of SbVidCap30.EXE. Now you can go into MS4 and specify SbVidCap30.EXE as your capture program.

That's a good idea!

I had the same problem. Found this in video capture release notes. It worked for me.

If you experience problems using a TV tuner card or displaying closed captioning, clear the Enable still image capture check box on the Capture tab of the Preferences dialog in the video capture mode.
