Capture Insanity on Vegas Pro 12 - HELP!

Denicio wrote on 9/25/2022, 9:34 AM

I am attempting to capture using vegas and having bizarre results.

Here is my setup:

Sony Hi8 CCD-TRV57 for playback. Analog out via RCA into a Sony DCR-TRV38 Digital Camera for the pass through. Out of the TRV38 via Firewire into a brand new SIIG 2-Port FireWire PCIe card.

Scenarios:

IF i ignore the Hi8 and just play some MiniDV tapes in my TRV38 it captures fine using V12. However, if i try and use the TRV57 passing through the TRV38 the vegas capture screen show a second of the video but then says "no capture device".

NOW....

If i play the 57 passing through the 38 using VirtualDub free software, it captures fine!.

So i know the signal path is working as it should.

Any thoughts or suggestions on what i should do? I'd rather capture inside of Vegas if given a choice. Seems like there is something i am overlooking inside of Vegas.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried turning off Device Control?

In that time of Vpro 12 I always used a third party program to capture all my ever made DV Avi files from the tapes to a few harddrives . The name is DVDate which gave always very good edit files for use in Vegas software.
This free program you can find here: https://paulglagla.com/en/dvdate-2/

What is Device Control and where can its toggle settings be found?

Hmmm....why exactly did you go outside vegas to capture during the V12 version?

Thanks for the info on DVDate. Does it have lossless compression? I am using VirtualDub at the moment with NO compression and MY of MY are the file sizes massive!

@Denicio right click on capture in the Video Capture app and select preferences. Turn off device control

Because for an easy task as capturing files I preferred this program written for only that task instaed of a program with the main task editing

Thanks for the info on DVDate. Does it have lossless compression?

Why ? The program makes perfect files for the use in Vegas.

@Denicio, try using Scenalyzer Live. It will capture to standard DV files and is now free.

DMT3 wrote on 9/25/2022, 12:03 PM

The 38 is converting it to a DV file. The other programs mentioned, as well as Vegas, will capture in the native DV format so minimal loss of quality. Virtualdub is converting the DV to uncompressed, which is overkill.

Does it preform lossless compression?

I just transferred a Hi8, 3.5 hour family holiday video and the file was 45.8 gig!!

DMT3 wrote on 9/25/2022, 12:31 PM

DV is a lossy format, but by running it thru the 38, you have already compressed it to DV.

Well, VirtualDub without compression just finished a 3.5 hour transfer and the file size is 45 gig.

When i had an XP rig (RIP) that used VD with Lagrath lossless the file sizes were way more sensible.

I'm out.

jetdv wrote on 9/25/2022, 1:27 PM

@Denicio, DV is roughly 13Gig per hour. So 3.5 hours would be about 45Gig. So it sounds like it *IS* capturing standard DV.

Boom Shakalaka Boom!!!

This did it!

This one setting is now letting my video through!

Thanks for this suggestion!

@Denicio You might mark DMT3's post as the solution.
