You can capture in AVI and then use Vegas to render them to MPEG. Vegas' VidCap program will not capture in MPEG. There are many other programs that will capture directly to MPEG, but the quality is usually quite poor compared to capturing in AVI and then rendering to MPEG.

You can try using Nero and select MPEG-2 format for DVD (PAL o NTSC).

In this case, 25Gb (AVI) are storen in only 5Gb (MPEG-2 DVD NTSC format)
