I've gotten the second part of your message many times. Usually turning off the DV source and turning it back on again clears it up.

I'm a little concerned about the "usb" appearing in the first part of the message. That's disturbing.

I get that whenever I forget to plug in my firewire before starting capture. Did you have Pinnacle software installed before?

fire wire is plugged in and restarted everything several times...

One suggestion -- boot up in safe mode, open Device Manager and remove all unused usb devices.

I think this could also appear if something else is already using the 1394 device before Vidcap starts.

Yes, the fact that it's identifying itself as a USB device makes me think that it's not a 1394 device, in which case vidcap will never see it.
