Capture problem - Digi8 Conversion of analog 8mm

Forgive me if this is a bit off topic or posted on the wrong side of this forum . . .

My 'collection' of vidcams is now four, all Sony, all 8mm. One is a mono 8mm. It still works, but sees very little use. My Digi8 (TRV103) and Hi8 (TRV917) are my two video workhorses, and an aging, but capable CCDV220 I use mainly for onsite live audio recording or to create the sound track in a multi-cam session(PCM stereo w/two external mics (='quiet' soundtrack free of cam motor/handling noise). . . video is regular 8mm).

When I need three video angles, I'll pull the lense cap off and use the the 220 in addition to the other three.

My problem . . . I've discovered that, while I can convert/capture 8mm footage from the CCDV220 to DV by playing its tapes through my Digi8's firewire, the resultant sound track is a weak mono version of the PCM stereo that the 220 lays down and can playback. Since this cam's sound track is the one I want to use as my master, I have to resort to yet another step of recording audio only from the CCDV220 analogously, then, import and sync that track to my video project.

It's not a big hassle, just one more step, one more project-long increment between start and finish of a project.

Obviously, there is a difference in the way this older cam lays down its stereo tracks, and, I know that it actually records three tracks per session, two PCM stereo, one mono (for narration purposes) (that third track saved me once, the PCM heads clogged during an imporant recording session . . . they were garbage, but the mono track was pristine).

Anyhow, I'm wondering if anyone else is familiar with my older cam, if, short of what I'm already doing, there is anyway around the problem. Obviously, all my archival, unedited footage will pass into obsolescence when this cam finally bites the dust. Until I started capturing to the PC, I was never aware of this apparent incompatibility.

I bought this beauty new back in '87 or '88.

Any comments welcome.
