Capture problem with Canon camera

I have never had any capture problems with capture using my Sony Digital 8 camera. I have just been loaned a brand new Canon MVX 250i which a friend would like me to edit but when I connect the camera the PC doesn't detect it. Do I have to load the Canon software called Video presenter so that the camera will be recognized? If so is the software of any use? I would think that it's highly unlikely after using Vegas. There is also a second disk called Digital video solution disk, which I know nothig about. It says it must be installed to use it. I'm running XP Pro.

Any help would be much apprecieated.

No, the camera should auto detect. Does it appear in the AVC devices in your Control panel? If it does, you might want to double click it and tell it to update the driver. Nothing really happens, it just sorta says "I'm here" to the system. If I remember right, that's a small PAL DV cam, right?

The camera doesn't appear in Control Panel or my Computer. I have never looked for a camera in control panel before but I suppose it would have been there if I had looked. It have often seen external drives, flash drives & external drives pop up in my computer.

Your correct it's a small PAL DV Cam.

I've got this cam, and for some reason it doesn't automatically see it in Vegas capture - if I start playing a tape it springs into life, and I can then control it normally
