Vegas' VidCap program captures through firewire. If you don't have a firewire cable or a firewire port in your computer, go get them now. They should only cost about $15 to $20 each at a local computer store or Wal*Mart.

Capturing is almost as simple as pressing the "capture video" button in VidCap. If your camera is set to VCR mode, turned on, connected to the computer through firewire, and you have Options / Preferences / General / Enable DV device control turned on then clicking the capture video button will transfer the video to the hard drive. There are lots of options, but we can worry about those later on after you've seen how basic capturing works.

When you've captured through firewire you'll end up with an AVI file that is about 13GB/hour of video. This file will work extremely well in Vegas.

Hi,

I am just starting out playing with firewire and Vegas. On Vegas capture video and capture tape are grayed out. Any hint on how I can checkout if the Firewire card installed right? I pluged the card in and Win XP seems to have found it. I checked device manager and I see the card had installed 5 drivers all named 1384 something. Somewere in a help file I found a referance to remove the drivers, reboot and install a driver from the XP disk. However with PLUG AND PLAY I keep getting the same 5 drivers installed each time I reboot.

So my question is, how do I get Vegas to see the card so I can get video from my Sony PD170 into my computer?

Thanks

VERY Basic here - but is your cam turned on? - just checking

Yes it is on.

I get a message

THE USB DUAL-MODE CAMERA COULD NOT BE OPENED

I don't know why Vegas is seeing my Firewire card and PD-170 as a USB camera? I do have a small USB camera on the computer. Could it be seeing this? And if so why is it not seeing the firewire?

Thanks
