Capture stopped working-Software won't reinstall

Using Vegas 7 with XP. I've been using the program fine for a year or so. Then a couple days ago capture wouldn't detect my camera. Perhaps it has something to do with updating Windows media player, adding V-Cast (Verizon's music player) or running Windows updates.
I tried reinstalling Vegas 7, but it wouldn't reinstall because I already had it. So I tried add/delete the program and reinstalling. That didn't work, so I did a restore back to the install, capture still didn't work.
When I try and do a reinstall it says I need MS DirectX 9.0. That's fine, it's on the disk, says it installs fine, but then I get a "Requirements not Met. Click OK, to close out of install". I've tried a disk defrag. I've tried installing DirectX from MS site. I'm stuck.
More background - resently installed Office 2007. That caused problems because I had it installed along with Office 2003. I thought I had that all fixed - but I'm wondering if I messed something up with the registry when following directions to delete office from there for a clean re-install.

I thought if I gave it a new title maybe someone would see it and help me.

I'm no expert but if I'd gotten myself into such a tangle I'd reformat the disk and start off from scratch again. I'm certain there's a more elegant solution but my brute force approach always seems to work.

Install the DirectX direct from Microsoft reboot then do a windows update, reboot, then install the latest Vegas not the one on the CD.
