Capture using MS Movie Maker vs VV3

JavaNut wrote on 6/22/2002, 1:11 PM
I have been struggling with VV3 capturing from a Panasonic PV-DV710 in that frames get dropped, "stuck" and audio gets out of sync and is garbled. However, if I capture using MS Movie Maker that comes with WinXP, I have no problems.

I have also noticed that when using VV3, I get about a 20% cpu utilization, but on Movie Maker, I get next to zero.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Do you capture to your Primary hard disk or to another one? (I am not talking about a partitioned hard disk, I am talking about a different physical one)
Some say that dropped frames occur with Video Vegas 3 (or any other capture utitlty) on some system because the capture is done on the harddisk where the operating system is install.
About the audio garb and "stuck" issue, maybe it's shared ressource problem.

Strange....my reply never got posted.....

Anyway, I recognize the problems with physical disks and separating them, but my question still stands....Why can MS Movie maker capture audio and video properly but VV3 cannot?

If MS Movie is doing some kind of tricks under the cover to keep from getting interrupted, can this be duplicated in VV3?

GG,

I went in and checked my IRQ settings and found that my Radeon 8500 is using the same interrupt as my firewire host controller. This concerns me, but I cannot seem to do anything about the IRQ settings. Even so, this doesn't appear to affect MS Movie. What can I do??

Any help is greatly appreciated...Thanks!

I don't know the tech details, but note that VV3 recently issued, then recalled, an update 3.0b--the readme file that went with it listed various fixes, among which were several items devoted to improving the performance of the capture utility. I suspect that the next update (3.0c I imagine) will probably do the same thing.

"If MS Movie is doing some kind of tricks under the cover to keep from getting interrupted"

You said it: it's another of MS conspiracy scheme. they want to monopolise DV editing too!!! and try to make Sonicfoundry look bad ;)
I am not good in troubleshooting hardware problems online, especially about IRQ conflicts (if your problem it's an IRQ conflict that is). I will have to have your PC right in front of me and dig in. The first step i would do if you are up to it is to move the OCHI 1384 capture Card and the audio card to different PCI slots.
Why in movie maker it works and not in VV3? well they are millions of different type of hardware configuration out there. Some, not many, have problems with VV3 capture. Maybe Movie maker is created by the OS manufacturer so works better? your guess is as good as mine. But I still vote for the Conspiracy theory just in case - it makes sense :D

Naw, if it were really a conspiracy done Microsoft-style, the captured files would only be readable at maximum quality with another MS application. Also, there would already be at least one update out on the capture s/w, trying to patch a hole where rogue video viruses take control of the Media Player. Finally, every 500th frame of the captured video would have a tasteful watermark in the corner, saying, "Sign up for Microsoft Passport to remove this message" !

Dont forget that it would only work with Internet Explorer installed and you must be a subscriber to MSN.

On a more serious note....I unfortunately cannot change the IRQ settings. The firewire is built into the motherboard and the video is AGP. Windows is re-mapping them to 16....Why???? I haven't a clue.

As a once PC repair technician, I sometimes miss the days of dip switches. Short of buying a new firewire card or hard disk, I am not sure what else to try.

I did, however, find out some other interesting news today....when I hook up my PV-DV710 to by Sony 65" XBR, it recognizes that I plugged in a device but it cannot read the signal. And, to make matters worse, my Philips DVDRW985 set top DVD recorder also has trouble recording the data from the camcorder (audio sync problems). Does anyone have a PV-DV710 or know of any problems with this particular model?

God, why can't standards be standard!
