It's an old practice to not take audio when you digitize. For most of us this goes back to the days of Beta SP (at least!).

Some systems allow for this but in many cases the audio is part of the whole digital stream. If you are simply capturing from tape it's simpler to just take the audio, especially since it's really just a small part of the overall storage hit.

On the other hand, if you're digitizing (taking video in over something like SDI) then there's already some conversion going on and it's a simple matter to not take some of the audio. In this case you could be marking which audio tracks you want to take in your batch capture list.

Wait! Vegas can't import a batch capture list? Hmm...

I suppose that back in the infancy of digital edit systems it might have made sense to skip some of the audio to save space. Back when a 1 GB drive was a novelty and people were digitizing their analog sources as low data rate MJPEG, audio could have been a more significant portion of your storage needs. Now, it's just not much.
