yesterday i captured 5 -60min clips ... after each capture
i checked play back of file ( using vegas capture) to make
sure image and sound were OK and all was good ...
BUT now when i put any of the files in VV timeline there is
NO sound track ?
openimg the file in V capture i have sound !!!
clicking on file to open in windows media player = no
sound ?? ...

the hardware was from VHS deck to panasonic DV deck then
firewire from dv deck to computer .. the dv deck was only
used for electronic's ( did not record onto dv tape) ...

V capture was set for type 2 dv file .... audio on dv deck
was set for 16bit and i assume 48K ? there is no option for
anything else - only choice is 12bit or 16bit ....

any suggestions ?

Hi Donatello...strange...are you sure there was no sound
when playing back in media player? The reason is because
Video Capture and Media player are very similar when
playing back files...try recapturing a small clip with the
Type 2 preference unchecked.

thanks!

Dee i ended up dumping the files and re-digitizing ... i
did track down how to NOT record that type of file
again ... as i ststed i was playing back VHS tapes thru a
panasonic DV deck ( using dv deck electronics only) - i had
the DV deck set to PASSIVE edit mode ..switching to
recorder edit mode fix the problem ? don't know why but if
works ... leaving it in passive mode creates these files
with NO sound in VV timeline ???
did NOT try the unchecked TYPE 2 ... will give it a try
this week and let you know .....

I found this topic via a search on [no sound]. The
described experience is very near to a problem I
experienced for the first time to day.

I had been running VV2.0d but not using VegasCapture.

To keep a long story short, I decided to delete the other
capture program and installed VidCap2.0b (I'm running
Win2000).

I found that captured files could be previewed to my
external camcorder with sound, but could not be played back
in VidCap or from WinMedia, and, on the VV timeline, only
about 6 seconds would show, then nothing.

To solve the problem (I think I have it solved), I
uninstalled both VV and VC, re-installed, virst VC, then
VV. We'll see how that works.

Still curious as to why I had a problem. I know the sound
was in the file, because it played back on the external
camcorder.

Also, during my troubleshooting, I got sound on one test
avi, but the sound was in "slow motion", ie. it was slow
and low in pitch . . . go figure.

There were one or two occasions amongst all my
booting/rebooting/troubleshooting, when everything came
back to normal in VidCap for a little while, but, when I
exited and tried to put affected avi's on the VV timeline,
problem returned and persisted after I closed VV and went
back to VC.

Hope whatever it was is gone from my system, but would be
curious as to source and proper correction of problem
should it occur again in the future.

Thanks.

Happy to report that, after uninstalling both VV and VC and
reloading them, sound is functioning normally in the 2hr
avi that resulted from my latest capture session.

A related observance, however:
I started this capture session around 11:00 PM last
night, went to bed, woke up this morning to find the
counter still churning away and some 6hrs+. When I clicked
the stop button on the screen, the report looked normal
(6hrs should have been close to my limit for storage
capacity), and the size of the file was, as expected,
around 25-26 GB.

Why did VegasCapture not stop when it reached the end of my
tape (well, apparently, it did sort of stop, as only the
counter continued running, no data was passed to my hard
drive).

Just curious. Anyone else experience this?

Well, seems I spoke too soon. Just recaptured my project.
Six hours worth. Each of the clips plays with sound from
within VideoCapture, but there is no wave form showing on
the timeline in Vegas Video, and if I right click and press
play from the explorer window, there is no sound there,
either.

Is this a known issue so that I can find info on it, or am
I suddenly doing something wrong?

Hate to write message to myself, but, I figure that someone
else might experience the same problem and be able to
benefit - I do believe I've located the source of my
problems.

On another thread in this forum, someone corrected one of
my replies to report that VidCap had been updated to
version e, so, I downloaded and installed it. Didn't solve
my sound problem, but when I tried to import problem avi's
onto the timeline which I had captured in the new verision
I received a message which, I believe clues me in. Seems
that there are gaps on the analog recording I'm trying to
capture. Of course, in the absence of an analog signal, my
Sony Camcorder switches into Digi8 mode, which, I'm
guessing causes some change in the format of the audio
signal flowing through the firewire. Pure speculation on
my part, but I'm in the process of dubbing the offending
tapes from analog to DV using two camcorders so that I will
be able to capture from an uninterupted digi8 source next
time, and will report back my results.

Hope someone finds this useful. . . if not, my apologies in
advance for cluttering up the board.

i have NOT had any problems since i came across the passive
edit mode VS edit mode on my deck. again this was
transferring a analog VHS tape (passing thru the dv decks
electronic's only - no dv tape recorded). doesn't matter
what mode deck is in if you are recording to DV tape..
i also came across this a few times trying to go from
analog tapes passed thru DV camera electonic's ( not record
onto dv tape) BUT just too much trouble to record for 60
min and then find there is NO sound in VV timeline... now
just use the DV deck in edit mode .... NO problems with DV
tapes thru firewire ...

DV - out of syc tape ( this does NOT apply to analog)...
for future reference .. i have a canon DV elura and if i
capture in TYPE 2 it was approx 18 frames out of syn at 60
min ... unchecking the capture as TYPE 2 box and capturing
as type 1 it was 1/2 -1 frame out of syc at 60min .... on
a canon GL 1 TYPE 1 or 2 it made NO difference - GL was
always within 1/2 frame at 60 min ...

syc test was clapping a film slate every 5 min recorded
on each camera up to 60min .....

DB:
Have just finished an editing session on the first of my
analog-dubbed-to-digi8-captured-though-firewire tapes.
Absolutely no problems with sound.

It's too bad I didn't realize this earlier - could have
saved a lot of time. It's not a new issue - making certain
there are no unrecorded spots on an analog tape, but, these
are really old tapes, and it's been a while since I dealt
with analog altogether, let alone worry about blank spots.

Dubbing first to DV, in my opinion, gives a better overall
result in terms of video appearance, saturation, etc., so,
from now on, it will be the only way for me.
