Capturing Analog Video Through My DV Camcorder

dpdixon wrote on 10/22/2003, 11:27 PM
I would like to capture analog video into Vegas Video through my DV camcorder. I know I can record the analog material onto my DV camcorder and then capture the material from the tape to Vegas. But I would like to skip the step of first recording it to the tape.

Is there a way to capture the incoming video to my DV camcorder without a tape? I can see the video stream on my camcorder but Vegas doesn't see it.

Any help would be great. I'm using Vegas Video 3.0

Thanks

The answer is dependent on your camcorder. Some allow pass-thru and others don't. Most of the higher end (1K+) cams do allow pass-thru, and you should simply be able to set the VCR and play back thru it. You may need to select "analog in" from a menu on your camera.

I have two camcorders, a Sharp VL-WD450U and a Canon ZR I have not tried the Canon yet because I have not been able to get it recognized. I thought if I was able to play the anolog source and it showed on the camcorder screen that it should be going through the DV link. I guess not? I searched the manule for pass-thru but couldn't find anything....

Thanks for the quick response.

You need to disable device control in Capture preferences, or Vegas will be looking for video from tape in the DV camera.

I am about 98% certain that the Canon ZR series all have analog pass through, so you should be able to capture analog directly without first going to tape. Follow Peter's advice about disabling device control.

I have a ZR45MC. Go to the manual under AV/DV converter. You have to enable it ( the headphones jack toggles back and forth between phones and AV in) and use a composite connector into the headphones jack from your analog source. Firewire out as per usual. Critical to go to Options, Preferences, General tab and disable device control. As noted above, then just use Vegas capture, batch capture is not available for this kind of setup. DGrob

Thanks to everyone!

I just got a new camcorder that has the pass-through option and it works great with the info you all gave me.
