Capturing- audio ch missing

I recorded video with my SOny PDX 10 using two mics, going onto the two channels. LIstening to the osund through headphones connected directly into the camera, both channels are audible. BUT when connected through firewire and playing back the clip from the camera (or capturing) is stripped of one of the channels!
Where does the other channel of sound go?
Capturing from another cheaper Sony cam that was using its internal mic, the stereo sound is registered.
What' going on?

What about that camera's built in mics? If the camera's built in mics don't come through the firewire in stereo, I'd guess that that particular camera has an internal problem. There could also be a loose connection within your firewire (possible short). Do you get a stereo track in the timeline with only information on one half of it?

I think there's a know problem with that and a couple of other cameras and Vegas. I know the Sony guys were some time ago asking if anyone had a range of cameras and if they were having problems and I've seen specific posts before about the PDX 10.
Have you tried using another camera / VCR to capture the tape. Rest assured if you can hear it in the cans when you play the tape back then the other channel is in there somewhere.
If using another camera/VCR doesn't fix it then I'd suggest trying Scenalyser, you get a free trial period.

Capture with Scenalyzer Live and tell it to put the other audio channel into a separate WAV file. Sounds like your camera captured one mic on stereo 1 and the second on stereo 2. Vegas doesn't capture stereo 2.

We have 2 PDX10P cameras and experience the same problems. Here's a reply from the Vegas guys about it....

-----------------------

"As you have discovered, the PDX10 records stereo audio differently than other Sony DV/DVCAM cameras (such as the PD170, VX2100 etc). We have made an inquiry about this design anomoly to the factory in Japan and they have no plans to address this, and since we are reliant on the Microsoft driver it is very difficult for us to code around their capture driver. We do have PDX10s in house and may be able to produce a workaround in a future version of Vegas (post version 5).

I understand that this is a problem for you and for now would suggest checking out Scenalyzer (scenalyzer.com)- this product captures a separate wav file in addition to the standard DV clip, so you will at least be able to access your second channel.

-------------------

Hope this clears it up for you...

oh Hail to this support forum!
thanks for the Scenalyzer tip - as predicted, it picks up both tracks, intact on the tapes. strange little problem, though... and irritating (Sony!)
