Capturing Audio from Analog Source

I am having difficulty capturing audio from an analog source. I have my Sony analog 8mm camcorder hooked to an "All-In-Wonder" unit which is then plugged into the card in my computer. It's a brand new computer (about two weeks old). I get video alright, but the audio doesn't come through. It is very frustrating because the propject I am trying to work on is due by the end of the week. Help!!

How are you connecting the camera's audio to the computer? You should probably be connecting it to the sound card line-in jack. Then you'll also have to enable the line-in for recording. Double-click the little speaker icon in the lower right corner of the screen, click Options / Properties / Recording / OK. You'll now see a list of available inputs; select line-in and set it to about mid-scale to begin with. You can adjust the volume level later depending on how well the captures go through.

I have the All-in-Wonder (Radeon 8500DV) and I know exactly the problem you are having.

The All-in-Wonder (AIW) audio plugs into your sound card through the external audio input jack. The easiest way to solve your problem is to unplug the All-in-Wonder pass-through from your sound card input, and instead plug your video camera sound directly into the sound card.

While it is possible to get the sound from the AIW audio input to play into Vegas or Sound Forge, it involves making changes to how sound is mapped through Windows. Rather than risk breaking other things, I found the approach outlined above works great and keeps me from breaking other things.

Interesting. My AIW card doesn't have an audio input. It only has a stereo line out. Then again, mine is probably a 1998 or so vintage.
