Wow, that sounds like a lot. I just caputred 60 minutes of DV to AVI and it was about 12.7 gigs I think.

Very few systems are able to encode to MPEG directly through software in realtime without hardware assistance. SonicFoundry's VidCap is intended for capturing DV in realtime which takes about 225MB/minute or about 13.5GB per hour. This brings up the question of how you are capturing. I'm assuming you're not capturing DV, but instead are capturing an analog signal. Is this correct? VidCap won't convert analog to DV while it captures. What capture card are you using? You may either have to continue capturing to uncompressed AVI and rendering to a compressed format afterwards, or using the capture software that came with your capture device instead of VidCap.

ATI's TV tuners can capture directly to .mpg. You have to use their software to do so. I used to use their TV Wonder. It was good for recording TV shows and burning to VCD but if you want quality for editing, either capture to DV avi or uncompressed avi. I realized that very quickly and have since ditched the ATI card. My suggestion, invest in more Hard drive space and keep capturing in avi. -Shon
