Capturing from Analog to Digital

I was hoping to capture video from my old Olympus analog camcorder to my new digital Optura Pi. With the Optura Pi on VCR mode I am able to view and hear video from my old analog camcorder, I am just not able to record the audio and video onto the DV tape. When I press record and unlock pause, nothing happens, yet the playback comes out black. According to the manual the Optura Pi is capable of taking these images and converting them into DV format. What am I doing wrong? It did say in the manual that "if an anomalous signal is sent from the source, the images recorded on the tape may also be anomalous(although it may not appear so on the screen image) or not recorded at all" What does that mean? Is it not the whole point that the digital camera will convert those images into a digital format? Please help!

Have you tried capturing while you can watch the video on the display? Your digital cameracorder may support "pass through" mode that converts directly from analog to DV over firewire without needing to record onto a DV tape. Start up VidCap and see if you can monitor the signal on your computer screen. If you can see it there then this should work fine. You'll have to go into Options / Preferences / General and UNcheck "enable DV device control" to keep VidCap from trying to control the camcorder.
