Capturing from HDV Cam live to 422 ...

OK, well, i was thinking that in some instances, running a laptop with component input would be a good solution...

Now what i want to know is, is there a BoB which Vegas plays well with which allows me to capture a 422 stream (any codec will do.. )out of the component outputs from the canon A1?

Also as ive never even considered this in the past, is there a way to manipulate the frame rate of capture? Or is this dictated by the camera?
ie what im wanting to do is set the capture to record at 50fps as opposed to 25fps... call it a poor mans overcrank... lol
Basically its for in car shots or controlled shoots where slowmo would come in handy.
Ive noticed Vegas now plays REALLY well with interlaced HDV and combing is almost non existant, but it stil doesnt "feel" like its overcranked (as it feels when you watch something processed via Dynapels SlowMotion

I know i know.. go get an EX1.. but until the old ladys nan carks it, were not getting one... (her words not mine) LOL

ideas?? thoughts??

Well if the camera is only scanning the block at 25fps I gotta ask, where's every second frame coming from???

You can pull one trick though. At 50i you can get 50fps, at half the vertical resolution though.

Other thought is doubling the frame rate isn't really enough for good slomo from what I've read. For example 150fps seems to be the goal for most work.

I believe you can use the Intensity card with one of the Cineform codecs to get 4:2:2 HD.

Thanks for the reply Bob
would this intensity card work with a laptop?

Not certain, suggest you check the BMD and Cineform websites.
If you've got a camera with HD SDI (EX1) there's a number of options.

The Wafian recorder will convert to Cineform and write to HDD. Unfortunately around USD $10K.

Convergent Design's XDR will write I think 4:2:2 to compact flash cards as 50Mb/sec mpeg-2. In theory Vegas can handle this. Just when we'll see a XDR down here though is an interesting question. Hopefully when we do we'll be able to rent you one for less than a kings ransom.

Also of course the EXI does 720p60.

Our SI-2K will do from memory 120fps at reduced resolution (720p).
Vegas will not handle that footage but I could render it to something that it will.

There's a couple of high speed digital cameras in Sydney, I think the cheapest one is almost afforable, good for a few seconds at 500fps.

u know, the more i look at it, the more the EX screams at me....
60fps in 25p will give a lil over 2.5x slowmo...

sadly its a no can do at this time and i was looking or a cheaper alternative to an EX

Maybe if i sell one of my children.. lol

i think ill stick with PP options for now.. bugger..
